"The Ortho Project" (My lantern collection)
mr_trafimax_ortho_7726911.jpg "The Ortho Project" is an idea of mine in which all the lanterns I have in my collection go through a high resolution scan where 3D perspective is removed! This process leaves the lanterns in an orthogonal projection similar to how they were first created in blueprints. This is a very good approach to store the lanterns' design for the future, as well as allow models to be reconstructed in 3D using the Ortho View (still recommended to have the physical lantern to look up details though) or even one day become resurrected. Blueprints come in different forms, some being less detailed, while others being quite busy and hard to work with. I simply see the real lantern's body from all visible areas good enough to save, as that is what you see. There is an error in projecting 3D perspective back to orthographic, a slightly high one unless the price is right. I have spent quite a lot to be able to do this work because I see its value both for myself as a designer, but also for others to expand their view and learn more about these lanterns and how to process data.

The process is simple. The lantern is placed in front of a green screen chrome key, and a photo is taken. This is in order to detect what is the lantern, and what is not. In order to remove perspective, one has to take this photo from very far away. So far in fact that light travel from the target into the camera's lens in a straight path. But the farther away the camera is from the target, the smaller the target becomes, thus needing to be scaled up. Scaling up costs a lot of money, and there are quality issues along the way. My scaling is done all through the lens of the camera without any digital aid, which gives the best quality. It can be done better in a more controlled environment with 6 times as much money for the camera lens, and I mean it, from my lens to the next costs that much more, and I had to wait 5 months just to save up for my lens, and then wait for the weather to be compatible.
Each ortho collection photo contain information about errors, which should be noted in order to not confuse the data shared.
