Last year I was in Home Depot and saw a "LED strip light" that I thought was interesting.  It was basically the channel and sockets of a fluorescent strip with no ballast.  It even included a pair of type B LED tubes.

When I points my 365nm LED flashlight to my body, it causing a heat feeling at the area affected by the radiation. Also, UVA can cause eye damage, and if exposed long enough, also skin damage, hence most UV protection products, also filters UVA.
Also: Most eyeglasses protects the eye from UVA, hence you can stare into blacklight tubes.
Most modern bug zappers have warning from UVA radiation.

Are you sure? UVA doesn't destroy DNA like UVC does, that's why you can safely stare into a blacklight tube.

If you think there is no innovation anymore, you're willfully being ignorant.

We have multi phosphor LEDs with a CRI of 97. Better 5000k lamps than ever were available before. We have light bulbs that reach 210lm/w for where color rendering is not of great importance, at a cost even a private individual can afford them (before, only the biggest low pressure sodium lamps with zero color reproduction were able to get close to that level of efficiency).

We are seeing applications where separate red LED chips are integrated into the same LED component to improve the red reproduction and efficiency of white LEDs - rather than phosphor converting the blue light into red. We have violet pumped LEDs for better blue reproduction. We have moved away from the unreliable capacitive dropper LED drivers (ultra sensitive to voltage peaks) and now have linear and switching regulators that be used with dimmers and are much less sensitive to high frequency spikes on the mains. 

The fact that you don't notice it in DIY stores does not mean there is no innovation. Retail always lags behind professional applications.

I hate this myth so much. Price fixing is a problem, but standardizing on 1000 hour is not.

With 1000 hour lamps, now the consumer can choose the brightest 60w lamp available with no life span penalty. Before settling on that, the consumer could buy a lamp that bright but perhaps suffer from a very short 500 hour life span, or a lamp that bright but with a huge power consumption which makes it cheaper to just buy more lamps that have higher efficiency. Even back then they were looking at efficiency.

Aside from that, extended life lamps have always been available, even in those cartel days. They were marketed as a good option for lamps that are in hard to reach places like chandeliers or high ceilings, or above stairs.

It is such an odd thing that the phaseout of UVC lamps in Japan is happening even though they are an important part of  infrastructure.

Well, for the foreseeable future UVC gas discharge lamps still wayyyy more powerful than UVC leds, and they are very much critical infrastructure (they are absolutely required in water purification plants) just like halogen lamps in cars are unable to be phased out.

EU regulations explicitely exclude UVC lamps for sterilisation use from any efficiency and mercury regulations. I have to admit i haven't looked into vehicle lighting, but those were never part of any efficiency regulations at all. So in theory you can buy the nice spherical 1960s car lamps and light your house with those if you want brand new incandescent lamps.

Undoubtedly there will be a time at which UVC leds match the efficiency and output of discharge lamps, at which point the regulations will change.

Interestingly, I have seen that UVC lamps in Japan are also getting phased out by 2027.

Anything with mercury in it, with the exception of UVC lamps, is going the way of the dodo. That has been known for years.

So in theory, the mercury free SON lamps can remain in production. In practice, the market for those is already getting smaller every year. I wouldn't know where to buy those, i'd actually like to have a 50 or 70w one.
