Old double 40 watt fixture « on: June 20, 2014, 12:09:08 PM » Author: Larry
Here is a old double 40 watt fixture.
Unfortunately the porcelain on the reflector is broken around the bulb holders which are also broken.
I am not sure of the fixture manufacturer, but it might be good for parts at least if someone has one of these they are restoring.
I blew up the picture and the ballast is a GE Tulamp 40 watt.
Looks like a starting compensator also.

The broken porcelain is a major problem for me if restoring as removal and powder coating or painting is about all you can do with it unless of course you try new porcelain but I don't think it would be cheap.

I would like to have this one, but all the costs have to figured in to do a restoration of course. ;)

Update: 6/27/14
Well I have a weakness for these old fixtures. :P
I bid on it and got it.
The more I tried to talk myself out of it the more I talked myself into it. ::)
Not sure what I am going to do with it, but it is another project to keep me busy I guess. ;D

Two funky PG fixtures without the ballasts. :P
I think the big "G" on the end of the fixture is for a company that made gas pumps back in the 1950s and 60s.
There are now two bids on them.
I wish they were more intact, but would be good for spare parts.

Larry,

Thanks again for posting the link to these ,

The 2 bulb industrial is very interesting and worthy of a save .

The best way to get around the cracked porcelain issue around the sockets would be to simply use high gloss touch up paint , Thats what I would do , You certainly do not want to remove the original porcelain and paint finish from the fixture if you do , It not only looks new but it would be ruined.

Im hard core when it comes to keeping stuff all original.

To me, A fluorescent light fixture would have to be badly rusted before I consider a full paint restoration .

If it has a little light rust or  scuffing here and there I usually leave it alone.

As for those power groove 6 tube shop lights , WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!! There has got to be a way to get those saved , Of course before shipping, The end caps need to be removed or they will be destroyed .

Those suckers would need to go by truck , Be plywood boxed and Ride the top load to make the trip.

Thank you Larry.

Roger.

Well , Again , Thanks for posting these Larry.

The power grove fixtures need to be saved & I don't know how to go about that but the 2 bulb F40T12 porcelain  fixture with the Tu-Lamp ballast although not a good looking fixture Deserves a home .

I will through in a bid on it & if someone wants to outbid me on it then please go ahead and do so. Its just if there are no bids they might put out out for trash since the sockets are busted $ I do have the black sockets for that fixture.

Roger.

With some help the fixtures could be brought back to life.
I would hope if it does not sell, it would be relisted as they are not beyond repair.

I recently bought a Mitchell Fleur-o-Ray fixture on ebay that was in rough shape for parts thinking they were all the same.
But to my surprise, it was a early pre 1940 model that had a reflector with flatter curve and a more heavy gauge steel with a small channel bent into the outer edges that is unlike any of the 1940 and later models.

It also had special screw clamps to hold in the bulb holders as the holes for the bulb holders were punched out big and the bulb holders have a very loose fit in the holes. ???
A pleasant surprise even though it will need a complete restoration to bring it back to life.

I have been trying to coax a person that was listing a bunch of 1940s Fluorescent fixtures on ebay to re list them again.
He has been going through some personal problems and was kicked off ebay for slow shipping complaints.
He told me that he got behind in shipping due to caring for a sick friend that was taking up a lot of his time.
But ebay still would not reinstate him, so he has decided to just forget the whole thing.
May be he will change his mind and resist them in the future as he had access to some real nice ones.

The fixtures and bulbs are out there in old barns and garages, it is just getting people to list them for sale. ???
I have contacted several sellers of old lighting fixtures that list on ebay and they said they are on the look out for old fluorescent fixtures now when they go to estate sales.
They have also told all their fellow buyers and sellers also to be on the look out.
It is just education of the unaware involved. :D
