Title: Crouse Hinds 100w mercury vapor retrofit fixture, does it have asbestos wiring?
Post by: HPS_250 on November 18, 2020, 12:52:24 AM
Here it is. This is a very nice fixture, but does it contain asbestos wiring insulation? See the fifth photo where you can see some wiring for the power connection.

I think fibreglass would be more a likely material for that sleeve. It seems too new (1980s) to have used asbestos wiring.

Thank you for confirming, I have been wanting to get one of these for a while but was worried. If this is from the 1980s I am fine.

Can we be 100 percent sure that this has fiberglass insulation? I just don’t want to risk it for one fixture.

It looks older than the 80's to me. I wouldn't risk myself for that fixture.  :-\

From what I can see from the pictures, so long as the insulation isn't damaged it will probably be okay. :wndr:
That is if it is Asbestos.

I wanna say that this is from the 1980's...but in the 1980's, HPS retrofits like this were the rage...so who knows?

It could be 1980s, or it could be older. Unless I am completely sure that there is no asbestos, I have decided not to buy this.

OK , 1st , the spec sheet included with the fixture lists a 35w HPS option . By looking through several catalogs on Lamptech I found that GE didn't list a 35w HPS until 1980 and Sylvania didn't list one till 1982 meaning the fixture listed is most likely 1980 or newer. I think I'd agree with joseph that the sleeve on the wire is fiberglass. 2nd , If you DO decide to get the fixture and your really worried about the potential of asbestos , when the fixture arrives , wear a approved particle mask , unpack the fixture outside , wet the wire sleeve with water from a squirt bottle or equivalent , keep sleeve wet and disassemble the fixture , remove the sleeve(s) from the wire , wipe the wires with a wet cloth , discard sleeves , wet cloth outside and VIOLA ! No more problem .

I've done MANY brake jobs on cars over the years and every manual I've ever seen says to not stir up any of the dust in and around the brakes , and to clean everything first with brake parts cleaner to remove loose dust and WEAR A MASK !!

Automotive brakes are usually FULL of asbestos. I follow all of the rules and have never had an issue . In the end , if you're uncomfortable with the possibility of asbestos , then stay clear.

If it is 1980 or newer, I’m sure I would be fine, but I just don’t want to risk it. Anyway, your idea seems like it would work! I guess I could always wear a mask and replace the wiring insulation outside. I would prefer to get a HPS version of this anyway, so I will probably just wait for one of those to be for sale.

For example here asbestos was banned in 2001, but it takes a couple of years to retire all asbestos products from the market, so if it was made in the early 80's there's still some risk.

Asbestos was technically never banned in the U.S. !  :poof: However , very few items still actually use it .

The world took a very long time to ban asbestos, the effects of it where discovered in the 40's I think.

If the effects of asbestos were discovered in the 1940s, it really crazy that they never completely banned it!  :o Still, I am not risking it for this fixture and will not be buying it. The money will go towards some GE Dichro-Color lamps probably.

I think the oldest this could conceivably be is 1981 as Crouse Hinds didn't get acquired by Cooper Industries until around 1981. As for asbestos concerns, I'd go with what wide-lite 1000 suggested to remove the sleeve. You can order replacement fibreglass sleeving from places like McMaster-Carr, Digi-Key if you're concerned about heat.

Surprisingly asbestos was only banned here around 2 years and they only stopped mining it in 2011.

I think that it's a shame that asbestos is a real serious health problem. It works wonders for its intended purpose.

Yes, so long as it's not damaged in any way, then it's safe to carry on using it.
Our ironing board (https://www.lighting-gallery.net/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-189235) is about seventy years old, and is still perfectly usable.  :)
So why throw away things that can carry on being used.?  :wndr:

I agree, asbestos was useful to a point. The health effects are more improvement to me than the use though. Thank you for all of the replies and suggestions. I will not be buying this fixture.
