HID, LPS, and preheat fluorescents forever!!!!!!
|
Has anyone seen any LEDized HID fixtures that contain failed HID lamps as a result of the ballast being bypassed before? In those situations, I would figure that some electricians might inadvertently replace a failed corncob with a HID lamp after seeing the ANSI code written on the fixture.

A good sparky would do a visual inspection of lume to see if it has a ballast or not. And even look if it funtional to replace a hid lamp. Pulse start lamps many time just wont start with out a ignitor anyways when it bypass. But probe start will thermally runnaway

You could see that happening with a mercury vapor lamp installed.

On 230V and mainly with higher power (so beefier) lamps the result is often just a tripped breaker and the lamp surviving. Apparently the current becomes so hogh so quickly the breaker trips way before the lamp components melt. Had even a 125W MV that "survived" quite a few attempts to install into incandescent fixture and worked for quite a long time afterwards. Of course, "often" by far does not mean "always"...
And indeed a good sparkie won't just blindly replace the bulb but really diagnose what really had failed...

A breaker might even trip on 208v mains too since most mercury vapor lamps need an OCV of about 200v to start and operate.
