Blacken a HPS Lamps « on: April 23, 2008, 10:02:01 PM » Author: GE M-400A1
Hey Everyone,

How would i get a HPS lamp to blacken like some on the ones you guys have pictures of? Would running a 35W Hps on a 50w HPS ballast do it?

I really want one that is blackened!   ::)

Thanks

a blackening is caused by leaking, I actually thought about this tonight...but really I am not sure if its possible on purpose cuz theres a risk you can actually END the life of the lamp cuz it would leak fully.......

Blackening of the OUTER is caused by leakage, blackening on the ends of the arctube is caused by sputtered electrode material.  You can overpower it which may make it age faster and possibly leak out sooner, but when they usually leak out thats it and they will only glow dimly on a NST!

I managed to get an 80w merc to go completely white on an 250w metal halide ballast.

A leaking lamp that still works must be rare - i'd expect the pressure to push out all the vapor in no time at all

Some leaked lamps can show signs of low pressure discharge on the high volt spikes from the starter, but they normally dont 'light up' the normal way

Ash: I saw HPS and MH lamps that leaking and still works.
All of the redded out HPS, that we are seeing in streetlights in Israel, are mostly leaked HPS lamps.
Here is a picture of a leaked Osram Powerball HCI-T 70W, in Supersol Deal supermaket, that still operating, but lights dimly.

When I was working at the local hospital, I've seen MANY that have leaked, only because they were cycling for a really long time! Usually months before the arc tube cracks, leaking the arc tube fill into the outer, causing the whole outer to turn silvery colored, protected MH lamps turn jet black!
