Hello @ all,

I found information on low pressure sodium lamps from the fifties with a table in a Polish book.
The table comparing different sodium low pressure-lamps manufacturers is interesting.

Very nice Olav! Didn’t know that in the 1950s in Poland these lamps were available. This is a good occasion to practice my Polish laguage a little bit :D

thanks you for your answer.
I don't think you could buy the low pressure sodium lamps in Poland after 1945.

I have no proof for my theory.

The picture in the Polish book from 1956 is the same as in the OSRAM brochure from 1937.
It was only retouched and the name OSRAM and the type designation on the lamp were removed.

Fascinating upload, thanks Olav!  I am most curious to see the lamps listed from MEZ, presumably same as the more recent MELZ of Moscow.  They seemed to make copies of the Philips SO type, but your book also lists two others Na1 and Na2, whose specs are clearly different from the Philips SO300/SO500 and Osram Na300U/Na500U.  My Polish is not good enough to see a reference to those in the text, but if anyone can find out what those are it would surely be interesting.

*Stalinogród is the name of city of Katowice that was used between 1953 and 1956

Discharge lamps are less sensitive to voltage fluctuations compared to incandescent bulbs. However too big of a drop can cause the arc to extinguish and turn off the lamp. Ambient temperature also negatively impacts startup, therefore in case of some lamps vacuum isolation is used. Every discharge lamp is subject to the stroboscopic effect. The light output they give is not constant but is pulsating 100 times per second with the 50Hz changes of AC supply. This effect happens in incandescent bulbs but is negligible due to heat inertia of the filament. Stroboscopic effect causes unpleasant optic illusions during the observation of moving objects (illusion of rotation in opposite direction,  appearance of stripes). This effect can be elliminated by anti-stroboscopic setup of two or more lamps placed next to each other, powered by supply with shifted phases.

Sodium lamps
In sodium lamps main source of light is the electrical discharge in sodium vapor. Sodium lamps most often are made with U-shaped discharge tube, containing highly diffused small amount of neon and some bit of sodium. Tube is made from a special glass resistant to sodium reactivity. To reduce heat loss the tube is enclosed inside a bubble of elongated shape with double walls separated by vacuum. For work in low temperatures (to -40°C) a bubble with triple walls should be used. Lamp base is usually E40 edison, sometimes Ba22 bayonet. On both ends of the tube there are tungsten electrodes. In past lamps were build to employ the electrode heating to make startup more easy. Current lamps are build for 220 or 470V with cold start, powered through a choke (if mains voltage is higher than startup voltage) or autotransformer. Schematics are shown in Pic. 112. Chokes and transformers in the moment of applying power give necessary voltage for startup and later when working currents starts to flow, they lower the voltage to a value needed for constant work. This however negatively impacts the cosϕ power factor to about 0.35 lowering the total lamp efficacy. By using a 0.1µF capacitor the power factor is corrected to about 0.8~0.9. Multiple lamps are connected to the supply in parallel, each with their own ballast. Initial discharge happens in neon vapor, lamp glows dim red. Between 3~12 minutes neon heats up to 250~300°C temperature, metallic sodium in the tube evaporates and the lamps starts to glow more brightly with yellow light, almost monochromatic (wavelength characteristic for sodium is 5890 and 5896 Ĺ). This color is very close to highest relative eye sensitivity. Also this light increases visual acuity by 20%, which is especially important in an area contaminated by dust, fog or vapor; lamps are good for exterior lighting of work sites, railway tracks etc.. Efficacy of sodium lamps is especially high and it's about 45~60 lm/W. Effect of voltage fluctuations on light properties of sodium lamp is lesser than in case of incandescent lamp. Relations of light output 1 wattage 2 efficacy 3 and lifetime 4 depending on voltage is presented in Pic. 113. Lifetime is around 2000~3000 hours, in that time light output is lowered by 20~25%. Ageing effect is due to the fact of pressure changes due to gas leakage from tube and chemical reactivity of sodium towards glass. Surface luminance is low, around 10~12 sb and lamps can be used without a cover. Technical data about sodium lamps of different manufacturers are in Table 23.

About the historical importance, this book is the only mention of LPS lamps in Poland between 1939 and early 90's. There were LPS lamps in Warsaw before WW2, after it the few lanterns that survived the war were soon scrapped due to lack of spare lamps and parts for fixtures. For decades LPS lamps totally dissapeared except for that one publication and reapeared in 90's when free market Philips products were introduced, including SRS201 fixtures and SOX lamps for them. It's a mystery if following the publication of that book any actual installations were made, in my opinion no, but maybe perhaps there were and simply got lost in history. I don't have any evidence.
