Search feature on LG « on: May 15, 2021, 05:28:59 AM » Author: lights*plus
Can the search algorithm or whatever the search thing using as an engine be improved?

Generally, when I want to find something related to lighting I come on LG but I often find myself disappointed. I'm now spending less and less time here simply because the "search" thing is so bad.

Example: I put "Goldfinger" for the word occurring in any message not gallery. Do it yourself and see the wrong results. The search for a word occurring in the galleries is much better, but for messages, sadly, I have to google it.

It's probably not a bug as such, the search can only turn up results on what people enter, and there is not a lot that can be done there.  :wndr:

Indeed. I see so many gallery pictures where no information is entered at all. If people don't enter the information, and not only that, enter it into the correct fields and in the correct format, then no search engine in the world is going to find it.

Do a gallery search, but make sure to un-check everything except 'Title' in the section below the search field.
Then play around with checking different options below. It actually works quite well for finding stuff.

On the forum side, make sure to put a check in the "Show results as messages" box!
There is a 'bug' in searches though... if someone adds a smilie (lets use Goldfinger as an example) then it also finds all posts where someone used that particular smilie

There's a bit of an improvement when I check "Show results as messages", so thanks for this.

Yes there's a goldfinger gif! But without checking the show results as messages, there are weird results. Words like "by" are highlighted, which goldfinger does not include.

IMO, the most limiting part of the gallery search feature is that fact that you can't search for keywords in the gallery comments. Sometimes comments have pretty useful information that I would like to revisit but can't find again easily.

I know using the search the entire site with Google feature does search gallery comments, but the feature has it's limitations. The main one being that it skips over pictures in member only albums.
