When electric appliances were connected to light fixtures. « on: December 02, 2021, 04:58:03 AM » Author: WorldwideHIDCollectorUSA
Has anyone ever known that the first electrical appliances had to be connected to a light fixture before there were wall outlets?

You can see that on the following PDF:

https://hollandmvp.files.wordpress.com/2013/05/early-electrical-lighting-in-homes.pdf

I personally think it would be funny to see stuff like TVs, phone chargers, desktop computers, microwaves, toasters, irons, and other modern electrical appliances connected to light fixtures rather than wall outlets !!!

What would it be like if you still had to connect your modern electrical appliances to light fixtures today?

Mummy told me she used to connect the iron to the light socket.  :o

They still sell adapters at Home Depot and the like to let you do it with modern lights.

Interestingly before NEMA outlets were standardized, you can get a E26 "outlet" installed. To prevent electric shock they typically had a cover over the socket when nothing was plugged in. They weren't that common but in older turn of the century mansions you might see them.

I have been thinking of obtaining some of these particular outlets sometime and using them as bare bulb light fixtures .

I believe that some time ago, either in Australia or New Zealand, there were two meters on houses, one for the lighting, and one for the rest. The lighting meter was billed at a lower rate. It didn't take long before someone marketed cords that could plug into a light socket...

Hmmmm, didn't the electric company notice when people's lighting consumption shot up by several kilowatts overnight..?  :mrg:

That is likely one of the reasons the system is no longer in use today...
