The wild Lampent hates LEDs!
|
Yesterday, I took a nice long walk around Boston and found out that the gas lamps have LEDs in them. I'm very not happy about it.

I saw an article about them wanting LEDs in Beacon hill's gas lights, what a shame. All because they're scared of carbon emissions.

SRP for life.

Very surprising and saddening to hear. A shame that the old gas mantles are being removed. Also, I'm surprised that they're making the effort to execute the dangerous job of removing the gas lines and installing electricity to the lanterns.

Removing old gas pipes could only be dangerous when they are in such a state, so operating them would be only way more dangerous for the public. Of course, assume any work is done by someone qualified for the work, not different from electrical or any other similar work.

Rich, Coaster junkie!

Not directly related, but I saw a clever idea on here once where 3 or 4 defused LED candle lamps were put into the top of a gas style post top lantern in a circle to replicate the gas mantle’s! It did look quite cool, and an ideal way of keeping its original appearance with electrical conversion

Sad to hear. If it was to boost light levels, supplemental luminaires on new poles would be a much better choice. Plus you can have the gas lights remain intact for decorative purposes.

Long live the HPS and SOX!

Sad to hear that the historic gas lamps will be converted. If it was up to me they would be converted to low wattage HPS, but obviously that’s no longer what anyone wants sadly now that LED has taken over. I understand them wanting to lower carbon emissions from the lights though, but for now I’m not sure that the electric grid there is much cleaner than a gas lantern itself. Last I checked most of the electricity for Boston is generated with natural gas anyways unfortunately.

I’ve always been interested in all kinds of lighting, mainly incandescent and HID, and especially all kinds of sodium lamps (HPS/LPS). I’ll tolerate LED but I’m not a fan of it. I’m not proud to say that my city has Devolved to LED.

For the same amount of light, the hgenerating the electricity first and then the light by even an incandescents was a total efficacy improvement even in the late 19.th century, with the electric lamp technology of that time. The gas lanterns are really that inefficient. A 40W incandescent equivalent consumes about 600..800W in burning gas (a smaller stove burner)... So yes, any electric light will be more efficient than the gas one, measured really from "well to light". Yes, the purpose of gas lantern operated in the electric era never ever was a way to get efficient lighting, it has always been a fancy city decoration. Problem is, such decoration becomes really expensive to operate, both in payments for the fuel and maintenance, as well as the CO2 emission load. The impact of all of that could be disputed, but it is the cost for just a decoration ornament, nothing really essential. The LED conversion is an attempt to retain maximum decoration value while reduce the costs as much as possible. I hope the retrofit will go the way of keeping the gas infrastructure for at least few lanterns, just add on the LED sources for the daily operation. So on special occasions it would be easily possible to temporarily remove the LED inserts and light it the original way...
