Green Beans Arcing in Microwave « on: April 30, 2025, 10:06:38 PM » Author: Cole D.
I’ve noticed for years now, that green beans sometimes arc when microwaving them.

Tonight I was heating up my dinner plate, and had green beans on it. I covered with a paper towel to prevent spattering. While I was microwaving, had it set for 30 seconds, my mom called me over to look at something on TV.

When I turned around after about 5 seconds to see how many seconds left, I saw that the paper towel had caught on fire, probably due to the green bean arcing! I stopped the microwave, but the fire kept going and set the rim of plate on fire as well, I just left the door shut until the flames went out.

It smelled terrible and wasted whole plate of food, had to throw away, food was covered in ashes. :( So I’d advise to be careful about microwaving green beans, because they do frequently arc. But this is the first time I’ve had it actually catch fire.

Collect vintage incandescent and fluorescent fixtures. Also like HID lighting and streetlights.

Never put a paper towel in the microwave. It can catch fire, because of the heat of the food.

I’ve always done it, to keep food from spattering. Never had an issue.

Green beans don't causes arcing. I would put a plastic cover above the rotating plate.

Paper should not catch fire in the microwave, it does not absorb enough radio waves for that. It can be set on fire if the plate it is on contains metallized paint, or if the food is arcing for some reason.

The food should NEVER get hot enough to get paper to catch fire. You need well over 200 degrees C for that. Food which contains water cannot get over 100 degrees, unless you nuke it for so long the water boils away (but then you're in different problems).
Regardless i'd use microwave foil, a microwave safe plate, or indeed some plastic lid.

Finally, things CAN arc in a microwave.
I've had it happen with something. I forgot what it was. But it is well known that two grapes that touch or almost touch each other work as a good enough antenna to receive a significant amount of power and start arcing at the 'antenna feedpoint' (where the two grapes touch).

I thought only metal can create arcs in the microwave.

Anything conductive (read: containing water and minerals) and of the right size and shape can work as an antenna. Because the field strenght is super high, even imperfect conductors can absorb enough radio waves to cause arcing.
