Does anyone have fears of incompleteness in their lighting collections? « on: May 27, 2025, 07:09:43 AM » Author: WorldwideHIDCollectorUSA
As I have been seeing that country after country has been enacting bans on traditional non-LED lamps and lighting equipment, I have been having fears that many of my favorite lamp product lines would remain incomplete for the remainder of my life as discontinued lamps become harder and harder to find.

For example, I have had fears that I might never be able to collect all of Philips’ TL-D 36W fluorescent tubes even though I currently have all color temperature variations of the basic forms of the “Super 80” TL-D 36W lamps sold for the EU market ranging from color 827, 830, 835, 840, and 865. However, I have had fears that I might never be able to find all color temperature variations of the Philips TL-D 36W “De Luxe” tubes ranging from color 930, 940, 950, and 965 especially due to the 2023 EU ban on all general lighting fluorescent lamps.

Does anyone else have fears that their favorite lamp product lines will remain incomplete due to the increasing rarity of discontinued lamps after having desires to have complete collection sets?

there is no sense in collecting anything if everything just radomly show up without any effort...

Apart from that  i don´t have the time nor interest to bother myself with pseudo fears about what i can and cannot have...

I that is so important for someone, I think collecting anything may be the wrong hobby.

I'm trying to collect as much 70W R7s MH lamps for my tracklight as possible, from fearing that they would be banned.
Here is my lamp collection:

Not really. While it is annoying that some once common lamps have become pretty hard to find where I am, it's not the end of the world. I can wait to buy those lamps locally, even if it's two days, or two years. I am running a little low for some of the lights I use but I have enough to last me 4-5 years at the moment. I will not pay eBay prices for newer or common lamps.

As for the overall collecting a certain thing or group aspect, I agree with Alex. If you fear not having a certain lamp or luminaire so much, might as well buy an LED and use that instead... Very common and you can buy as many as you need right now.

Most types of lighting that a lot of people on here (at least from what I noticed) have/use are very common, so even if you can't find it where you are, someone on here is able to point you to a source of them (as seen by LightBulbFun's comment above) or they're willing to offer you some of theirs. I noticed that most people that have uncommon or rare lights, are willing to dig deep to find them, as they really like them or want to seek them out. Even if a lot on people on here don't have it, someone can still point you to the source or possible source of finding one.

I can’t speak for prices of anything on eBay as I don’t use it to buy common things.

Although I’ve had an interest in lighting since I was about 10, I wouldn’t consider myself a serious collector?
I have what I have, and take or leave whatever comes along, I’m happy as long as I have enough spares in lamps/gear for my outside lighting, but over the years I’ve over collected stuff to use outside, then changed it all 😬🫣!
Then you tend to start all over again with another lamp type 🤨, I more fear that I can’t leave stuff alone to just run like it’s supposed to! 🤣

I agree with @Alex and @fluorescent lover 40, I don't have a fear of not being able to find a bazillion lamps, my "fear" is of collecting too much, there's a fine line between collecting and hoarding. Nothing a little self control can't fix.
