Why do you think so? Does it fail to ignite?

Probably Maxim means a funky looking blob of amalgam in the upper end of the tube?

It has a delayed ignition time. And yes, I am referring to the sloppy blob of amalgam there. The lamp also takes quite long to warm up after striking... I know the fixture is good for sure.

Give this lamp a few burn-in hours to stabilize before making any conclusion. Does it run-up to proper power and proper golden HPS color?

It is very flickery / loud on initial startup, and for the first minute. Then it sits in a dim, though deep, orange glow. After about ten minutes, it flickers some more and finally transitions into its golden yellow, almost CMH-looking Comfort HPS color.

I would think if it had leaked there would be some sort of visible sodium deposited on the outer envelope, appearing like a getter film. Maybe I am wrong though, I am no expert.

SDW white SON are known to be somewhat hesitant to do glow-to-arc transition on start, and flicker a lot, due to their simplistic electrode structure. Run-up time is long. Likely this applies to HPS Comfort lamps too. In the end your lamp appears to have a proper color. White SON are very sensitive to even minor changes, so if something is even slightly off, you won't get the expected color.

I would guess the leaked sodium would react with the outer to form dark spot/haze, so I doubt it.
could be it got mechanically hit while running or hot, so the molten fill splashed on the arctube side. Question is, whether the electrodes got damaged or not.

But running it few hours will give some answer. The rectification could well be caused by the fill covering the electrode, so it would take some time of operation till it gets distilled back to the proper space so it won't interfere with the electrode anymore, even during the warmup.

@Medved , @RRK - thank you. I ran it for about 12 hours yesterday and it appears to start and run normally now. Also, the sodium splotch seems to have cleared up with use.
