I have collected a bunch of garden posttop globes - some white and some transparent, of 8..12 inch sizes, most are spheres but there are also a couple cubes and other shapes in the lot. I plan to hang them from the ceiling in my "chill space", in random order at various heights, and put in lamps of different colors, most likely PL-C 7W or 13W between 2700..6500K in the transparent ones and possibly some lamps with a color filter in the opaque ones
Something similar could work for him. You dont have to convert it all to PL, you could as well leave it as plain medium base sockets to fit any type of lamp
I dont think color changing is good (though as much as i would claim it bothering, i have a PC with "gaming" led stripe on the mainboard that slowly cycles through RGB, and it does not bother me). If he wants so, get some medium base color changing lamps and have fun, and replace with other lamps when he gets fed up
(You could even get flicker flame neons, but they will likely light steady without flicker when installed upside down)
