I’m an LED fan myself and I prefer LED bulbs over other technologies nowadays, but I’m not a fan of the new LED fixtures, particularly residential fixtures. A lot of them you can’t change the color temperature, you cannot change the lumens, and if they fail, you need to change the ENTIRE fixture. They may last a long time but if they fail you have to get a new one.

And, some fixtures may not be dimmable, yet ANOTHER hassle. There are just so many things wrong with LED fixtures. Unfortunately, these are becoming more and more common, especially in newer homes.

I myself have this feeling that for people that do not know how to deal with electricity or for tenants renting apartments, they would end up with the hassle of having to call up electricians and pay large sums of money just to replace the entire fixture when it fails. In some cases, these integrated LED fixtures would often force tenants to violate rental agreements just to avoid being left in the dark.

I try to avoid integrated stuff as well, but unfortunately just that’s where the industry is going. Traditional fixtures will still be a thing, just not as popular.

Last year I was in Home Depot and saw a "LED strip light" that I thought was interesting.  It was basically the channel and sockets of a fluorescent strip with no ballast.  It even included a pair of type B LED tubes.

@icefoglights - That is so interesting. This is the first time I’ve seen these “LED ready” fixtures sold in stores. I guess this is better than integrated LED fixtures and I hope people start buying these instead of integrated fixtures at the very least. From the package, it seems as though the fixture has the same dimensions as the standard fluorescent version, so it could likely be retrofitted with a ballast (also still sold at the store) and fluorescent lamps. My local Home Depot still happens to have a handful of the F32T8 versions of this fixture on the shelf, but I can’t say I saw this when I was last there.

 I bought integrated LED one time...NEVER AGAIN ! I wouldn't have a problem with it if it was serviceable . HOWEVER  , with most fixtures , no one ever services them anyways !  Even back in the days of "normal" streetlights , if a bulb and/or P/C didn't fix it it got swapped and trashed . Thanks to rediculously high labor rates , it's usually cheaper to replace than repair .
