Pulse start metal halide ballast « on: March 17, 2011, 06:04:11 PM » Author: Metalhalide96
Hey i was wondering if a 150 watt pulse start metal halide ballast is the exact same size as a 150 watt high pressure sodium ballast?.

As both lamps have the same electrical charactersitic (S56 and M102), only except the MH need higher ignitor voltage, so M102 have the tap for the ignitor positioned a bit closer to the Neutral side of the winding.
Generally you should be able to operate S56 on M102 ballast without any issue (higher ignition voltage does not hurt). Opposite may still work indoors, but would have trouble at cold...

In Europe the ballasts are sold as common for both MH and HPS, the installer should then pick up the correct ignitor (they are mostly of the superimposed type, so do not need any tap on the ballast) for MH.
(in Europe all HPS are designed for 80..110V, same as MH; S56 is the only HPS i know with the same spec in Europe and US; pulse MH are everywhere the same)
