Is there a technical reason why High Pressure Sodium lamps top out at 1000W? « on: October 14, 2026, 05:14:52 PM » Author: DidiusMalloricus
I have never seen HPS lamps over 1000W or 1100W at most.
Is there a technical limitation for this?

Imagine how bright a 2000W, or 3500W HPS would be...

Sheeeeeeeesh. You could light the entirity of amsterdam on it and run it from the overhead tram wire!
Maybe put a tram car in series with it to ballast it.

But generally HPS lamps with wattage higher than 1000W were extremely rare, compared to MH lamps which were available up to 3500W, and for the entertainment industry even 18,000W.

With Sylvania's BriteArc set of lamps, they use quartz and are medium-arc. Quartz is fine with most halides but is not compatible with sodium-mercury amalgam.
Here is a 1500W lamp, even higher than 1100W: https://www.1000bulbs.com/product/89389/SUN-901692.html
