Thoughts on Glow Object? « on: October 19, 2026, 06:08:20 PM » Author: NeXe Lights
Today, I got one of their 18W electronic SOX ballasts, I have yet to test it, but I hope it works well and lasts a long time. Unfortunately, despite costing me $68, it is unpotted. Additionally, on their website they claim their ballasts can fully warm up a SOX lamp in 2 minutes, there is no way that's possible with severely overdriving the lamp, unless I'm missing something.

On the positive side though, they now make LPS fixtures for use with their electronic ballasts, although they are sold by inquiry only unfortunately. Additionally, in Alaska, they worked with a municipality and replaced 3 LED streetlights with their own 18W SOX streetlights. See here: https://glowobject.com/blogs/research/ketchikan-alaska-lps-street-lighting-pilot
I do wonder how well they will hold up. Any thoughts on all of this?

WHAAT! That's so so incredible! A new SOX installation is really really cool to see. I have no experience with their products, I doubt they can warm up in 2 minutes. Didn't know they made fixtures.

Woah, that's awesome!

I wonder what the streetlights look like at daytime? Perhaps it's an old cobra that's been retrofitted?

I found this image on their website. Presumably they would have used something like the fixture in the bottom left corner, just smaller for the 18W lamps they used in this project.

Hmm, that one in the bottom left corner is a European Urbis (Topaz) Altra. I wonder if they make their own version, or are using old ones.

Cool!
But why?
The large SOX'es are very efficient and on par with LED, but the small 18w ones have never been over 100lm/w, and the monochromatic light that does not bother astronomy can be made with direct yellow (non phosphor) LEDs.
