Best color/type of bulb or tube for aviary settings? « on: February 20, 2012, 01:40:07 AM » Author: RyanF40T12
Hi All,

I raise parakeets, or as known in Australia an England, Budgies.  I'll be building an enclosed aviary that will not have very much exposure to natural sunlight so am curious as to what the best type of bulb would be to replicate natural light.  Any thoughts/suggestions?

Thanks

No LED gadgets, spins too slowly.  Gotta  love preheat and MV. let the lights keep my meter spinning.

Use a standard GLS 25-60W incandescent/12V 20-50W halogen lamp/120V 25-50W halogen lamp. There is no such a thing "Full spectrum light bulb".

Check, if they do not have some special requirement (like reptiles do need UV-B to avoid skin fungi buildup).

If not (I haven't heard about any other animals then reptiles and sea aquariums needing that),
regular daylight (5000..6000K) should be fine. Maintain day/night cycle with proper hours...

i asked my friend and she stated that birds need a bit of uv.best gotten by direct outdoor exposure.or vitalites when that is not possible.i set up 2 shoplites with 2x 15w vitalites just for her birds.but they do best in the spring and summer when the cages can be outside a few times a week.the lights need to be as close as possible but take care that they cannot reach the cords.they WILL chew them.

Thanks for the feedback.  I will indeed be going with something in the 5000-5500k range for my aviary.  The only natural sunlight they really get is for a few hours as the sun heads to the west side of the house, so they will get a little natural sunlight, the rest will be fluorescent during the daytime.

Found a pretty good deal here:

Thanks
