Im fan of slowly dying fluorescent lamps. Preferable before final EOL there should be changes in color or light output and randomly appearing symptons like rectifying. Best EOL in near past was old T12 that had one electrode going bad. It would start ok but from time to time it started rectify usually returning to normal after some time. One day it did no return anymore and started flashing before resetable starter cut it off(I usually use resetable glow starters, Im not so concerned about ballast overheating but more for lampholders dying from excess heat, as replacement lamp holders for old fixtures are pain in the ass to find.

Modern fluorescent lamps are kind of boring since T8s dont usually rectify and Lamp EOL curve in modern lamps is very steep. Those usually work fine but just shortly before dying you can notice the EOL is near.

They do, but the rectification isn't visible on electronic ballasts. Usually the most telltale sign is one electrode glowing blue. Unless you mean modern lamps on magnetic ballasts.
