Wanted: 35/55w Lps NEMA bucket fixture « on: July 19, 2015, 04:14:28 PM » Author: Solanaceae
I was wondering if anyone has a Lps NEMA bucket fixture of 35/55w 120v they are willing to sell or trade. It doesn't need a lamp, as I am getting one from a fellow collector. Please PM me if interested. I would also be happy if I could get a 175w NEMA Mercury vapor bucket if I can't find the Lps bucket. Thanks.

Don't think a 35w-55w LPS NEMA baucket is made any more. Try making your own:

WARNING: Bought 2 ballasts from last link..shipped loose in box..nearly trashed by the time they arrived.

No capacitors! 14 microfarads are required and should be easy to find. Ballasts have welded brackets, 5" length exactly end to end, but probably too short for typical Nema heads. OCV is 430-530 Volts and they are HX-HPF autotransformer ballasts, no ignitors required.

I found this capacitor. Would it suffice? http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=141722922038&globalID=EBAY-US

Nope. Avoid motor run capacitors. My experience is they heat up very quickly, probably because they're oil filled. Advance, Magnetek or GE capacitors specifically made for HID lighting will do fine. Like these: www.ebay.com/itm/301564496382 www.ebay.com/itm/181219421497

The only problem with the second one is that it is rated for 300v instead of 450.
Will it function properly without capacitor?

For the 35-55w ballast I linked above, 14μF is needed! Never tried it without capacitor!

And according to ballast data or info, a 240 Volt capacitor is enough. Both linked caps are fine & the one that shows free US shipping is actually the same I used (but I had for nearly a decade as it's used primarily for 150w HPS).

thanks. I found a GE cap designed for use with metal halide ballasts and will buy that.
