Just yesterday I was in a civic center that had a large room (may have been a gymnasium) that was lit with 300 to 500 watt incandescent lights.  The fixtures were recessed into the drop ceiling and had those radial style grills over them.  A few of the lights were out, but the vast majority worked.  Wasn't terribly bright in there.

I was in a room like that once, complete with fixtures you described. It wasn't bright at all, and I really wished I could go up there and install large CFLs or metal halide lamps...

I've now acquired the lesser brother of the aforementioned lamp, a 300W - in pearl! What surprises me is they're pretty much exactly the same size. Big jump from 150/200 to 300. Probably made in the same factory too as these ones are osram-GEC and the 500s I have are plain GEC.

500w incandescent lamps were commonly used as late as the 1990s. Warehouse lighting and such.

I know this warehouse in palmer has cases on cases of high wattage westernhouse incandescents and the guy can't can't even get rid of them. I would but I don't have use for them or storage. I think when these were used lighting must of been a not as common as it is now. Probably used 1 or 2 fixtures instead of 10 leds in every nook and crany

Gym lighting, street lighting to an extent, and shovel floods. I've seen some in good shape from the 30s an 40s around here, still in use!

When I was growing up, I remember 500W incandescent lamps being used in our street, this must have been around 1960 or so. They were replaced not long after by mercury fittings of some description, I don't remember precisely which type. I was visiting there a few weeks ago and that street is now mainly HPS, but LED fittings are creeping in  Sad

I don't disapprove of LED's for domestic and other indoor use, I just don't like them for street lighting.
