Did anything go pop inside the ballast? I read somewhere that these lamps have a self destructing component in them that blows up and permanently shuts down the ballast if the cathodes fail.

I like that bright light you get from powering up an exposed tunsten filament, although I have not tried it with a mains powered lamp yet (I'm too scared!). But I have spent much time breaking open old low voltage christmas light bulbs and powering them with 9v battery.
