Actually, EYE/Iwasaki still makes 700w mercury lamps to this day. Philips discontinued theirs in 2003, GE discontinued in the 90s, and Sylvania discontinued in the 80s.

700w mercury vapor M1000's, AE327's & Westinghouse OV-50's were common on the freeways in Washington State. Ballasts are of course no longer manufactured, and EYE/Iwasaki is the only manufacturer of 700w merc lamps now, and only in the coated (/DX) style. I guess I'm lucky that I happen to own a clear Westinghouse 700w merc, albeit a very, very worn out one (still lights though according to the person who gave it to me).

700w mercury lights were also very common on the freeways in California on the taller 35' light poles that first went in use around '69 and became the standard in the 70s. Fixtures were M-1000s, 327s, and OV-50s with glareshields. Some of these are still in use here in Southern California but they are all now 400w mercury since the 700w lamps and parts have become hard to find.

Never I'll be able to get a high wattage MV. MAYBE some 1000W HPS fixtures in the parking lot of a shopping center that they seem to be old and will maybe be replaced soon...

I don`t suppose it matters now to the original poster, as this thread is nearly 10 years old, but the actual way to run a 700watt merc is with two, (a 400 and 250watt), MV ballasts in parallel. ;)

I have a 700w MV ballast that was removed from a decommissioned high mast fixture that was previously lighting a freeway in WI. Theres a pic of it in my gallery somewhere. Never came across a 700w lamp though

I think european and american 700W MV lamps aren't the same in electrical characteristics and requires different ballasts.

I've successfully run 700 Watt bulbs on a 1000 Watt mercury CWA ballast by changing the capacitor. I don't remember the exact value but I vaguely remember replacing 24 uF with 18 uF

Running any lamp on a ballast not designed for it runs the risk of under- or over-running the lamp and/or ballast, with life-limiting issues for both.
