A video done about 4 years ago by DanTheAwesomeMan. He explains why he overloads the lamp, He does is with a variable ballast and when he is overloading it, he makes it dimmable as the brightness changes. It's probably not dimming but it just looks like it.

dor123: I saw this video a long time ago and IIRC the reason he does this is to see how an HID lamp behaves (and fails) when overloaded.

He can try this on a cheap generic Chinese MV lamp. Not on a quality MV lamp.

Maybe he used it because either it was the first thing he had on hand (or bought) or he did not want to use a cheap lamp because the quality control of the cheaper lamps may make it fail prematurely.

But anyways it does suck that he did this to a perfectly good Osram lamp.

These German Osram HQL 80W lasted a lots of years, and had the Lifeguard emitter coating that turned the arctube white instead of black.
