What is the reason for self ballasted mercury lamps if they have the same efficiency and life of an incandescent?

The published advantages of self-ballasted MV lamps was longer life (around 10,000 hours) or about 7-10 times longer than the typical incandescents they were designed to replace with somewhat improved efficacy. The biggest drawback with SBMV lamps has been that they always have been quite expensive. :mvc:

I am wondering if it's reliable and it does last long time?

They were also a brightness upgrade back in their day, if you had a workshop lit with 500 watt clear GLS @8200 lumens, you could direct fit 500 watt MBTF, and get 13,000 lumens for the same load

One of the main reasons for using them was if the fixtures were in difficult to reach places where it would be costly and time consuming to re-lamp. Also they could directly replace incandescent bulbs.
