preheat vs rapid start lamps. « on: March 30, 2019, 10:50:29 PM » Author: Walter Knox
hi i was wondering what the difference between lamps marked preheat or rapid start is, the tubes seem to both work in preheat and rapid start fixtures no-matter what it says. how about the ones that are not marked? most of the new ones do not specify.

Lamps after 1960 were made so you can use them on either Rapid Start or Preheat systems, even if they're marked as such. The only lamps you can't use interchangeably are the F34T12 energy saving lamps. If it marked "For use with Rapid Start fixtures only." use it only on rapid start. If it says "For use with Preheat fixtures only" use it only on Preheat fixtures only. Also, don't put the Rapid Start energy saver lamp on ballasts that don't list it. You'll fry them. If the lamp is before 1950, use it ONLY on Preheat. They'll die faster on Rapid Start systems. If a lamp specifically says Rapid Start," use it only on  Rapid Start.
