Capacitors are rusted but fixture still works. I am wondering why two capacitors (apparently series) in a small 175 mercury fixture?

I'm always afraid to run any old used lights I get that have capacitors ever since the time I ran a OV-25 I got and the capacitors leaked PCB oil. Now I basically just don't run any old fixtures I get to be safe.

I bought myself a new volt meter with capacitance function so I can test all the caps in my lights before I use the .Besides, if you're concerned about the caps, install new ones . You get the piece of mind knowing that they're not shorted and won't leak PCB's or anything else everywhere .

I've never looked into replacing capacitors before. Isn't it difficult to replace them because they make like so many different rating capacitors and you have to get the exact one?

You can find the rating but the prices sometimes are way out of line. I have not seen two capacitors in parallel like this in a small wattage fixture before. The schematics are worn off the interior surfaces.

How much is out of line? I thought I have seen capacitors for like $5 on 1000bulbs.

My brother found me the cap I needed for the 700w OV-50 from here : https://www.alliedelec.com  The new cap + shipping was like $15 or so .

Well maybe if I try firing up another old fixture and the capacitor leaks, I'll give replacing it a try. I'd almost prefer not to though and just leave the fixture original. Maybe find some other way to cram a second ballast inside the fixture without removing the original. Or remote ballast it so I don't have to even worry about removing the original or fitting a second ballast inside.

...you have to get the exact one?

Yes. The micro farad needs to match with in 5% +/-. The voltage rating needs to meet or exceed.

If you can say yes to any of the following, you may have it too: :poof:
Can't resist buying more even if you already have an example in your collection?

Ah ok. I might look into it. Or I'll post a photo of it on here and ask for help.
