Very Early Automatic Light Control From 1937 « on: February 12, 2020, 06:12:49 PM » Author: Mr. Orthosilicate
I found this old brochure that shows a device to control lighting for school classrooms. It’s very large and bulky, and contains a phototube. I had no idea they tried to do this so early on, with such large equipment.

I'd like to know how a radio tube works as a photocell.

The system has 2 tubes : A "photo tube" that works as the photo cell and the "radio tube" that works as an amplifier, presumably boosting the signal from the photo tube to control the contactor unit .

Tube powered controls are really cool. I have a fisher pierce “jelly jar” pole mount control from 1955, still works. Has three tubes, one 1p40 photo tube, one 6sq7gt and one 6sf5gt I think. It looks awesome with the tubes glowing at night. It came with metal can tubes but I replaced them with glass tubes so I can see the glow.
