How many fluorescent tubes, or other lights you collect, do you have? :D « on: May 25, 2025, 03:52:42 PM » Author: tigerelectronics
A topic like this one may already exist here on lighting gallery, so please forgive me if that is the case and I just created a new unnecesary one!

I collect mainly fluorescent tubes. I also have a few HID bulbs, but only a handful.

I have around

*115 T8 36W 4 foot tubes, plus and minus a few.
*112 T8 18W 2 foot tubes, also plus and minus a few.
*13 T12 20W 2 foot tubes
*9 T12 40W 4 foot tubes (definetely need to get my hands on more!)

*35 ish U-shaped 18 and 20W bulbs.
*10 70W T8 tubes

around 110 starters of various kinds
I have 24 light fixtures of various sizes, and types.

I think I definetely don't need to worry about running out of tubes, lol.  :lol: Infact I probably have a little too many for my own good. x3 I have stocked up quite a bit recently, in fear of not being able to get my hands on tubes any more soon. One thing I Definetely need to stock up more on though is T12 tubes, I only have a handful of them which is certainly not enough to last me for the rest of my forseeable future as a lighting enthusiast. I definetely have more T8 bulbs than I will ever be able to use up, If you look at how many light hours they provide, yeah, I definetely dont need to worry.  :'-)

The advantage to having a huge collection like this, is that I can help out other lighting enthusiasts in the future who might need bulbs. So they are not just for myself! :) If someone needs some bulbs from me, I will not ask any money for them aside from shipping costs, because I have no interest in making any profit or anything, this is a hobby and hobbies should be for fun!

I am very curious how many tubes you guys have! :)

I've got 27 light fixtures total since I started collecting in 2022, though about 25 of them are streetlights of many sizes, from various parts of the world and ranging 17w to 400w. I've spent well over $3000 on them so far!

I have what many consider quite a small collection, but here we go:

Fluorescent:
• F4T5 BLB
• F4T5 CW
• F8T5 CW
• F6T4 Blue
• F6T4 Green
• F14T12 GE CW
• F20T12 Westinghouse Blackender
• (4) Dead F40T12s (not really collecting)
• (2) 12" Monitor CCFL tubes

HID:
• 400W(?) Diazotype Metal Halide
• GE 23W Self-Ballasted MH Flood
• GE 100W Clear Mercury Vapor

I consider myself more of an HID collector, but fluorescent tubes are a lot more accessible, so I have more fluorescent than HID.

It is not about quantity, it is about quality :)

There is not much point of collecting 100's of bland boring /765 4ft T8 tubes. Well, you may use just some of them in the future, but honestly, compared to modern 90CRI LEDs or say a good 830-940 CMH the light is just meh... Feels cheap office in Asia. One evening in Astana I saw a trash box full of NOS 36 and 58W in halo colors and... passed along.

On the other side, though not much into fluorescents, I won't refuse some historical tube, or some interesting phosphor, you got it.

The same goes to other lamp types,  not much point of collecting cheapo Chinese NaSc quartz metal halides in hundreds of pieces, OK I have some, even used them for the purpose of ligting. Well, at least compact MH lamps do not take much storage space and it does not hurt having 100's of them ;) On the other side, some interesting unusual colors or extreme sizes may well worth hunting! I think I have most of MH colors already now, short of some industrial and tanning UV, but still on the search for that elusive 'CDM Fresh' Philips lamps.

I’d say I have around 150 or so fluorescent tubes. Much of it is halophosphate CW in F40T12 and under. I do have plenty of higher CRI lamps for the living areas.

For HID, I think around 50 or so lamps. Mainly HPS and MV, nothing special, except for the vintage (but common) ones of course.

And about 200 or so incandescent lamps of various shapes and sizes, mainly common ones.

I've never counted, but i have about 30 fluorescents. About 10 for 'burning up' in actual use, the rest is semi-interesting to interesting stuff like standard T12s or Deluxe halophosphates.
About 15 incandescents, mostly for use as dummy load or dim bulb limiter, with the exception of a bunch of 15w frosted lamps i use.
About 20 HIDs.

Thankfully, lamps are very easy to store in a compact way. The fluorescents are under my bed. All of the others are in a drawer cabinet.

Aside from that, just a handful of standard fluorescent fixtures, 1 street lamp, 2 18w SOX wallpacks.

Enough to be too many to count.  :mrg:

As I'm downsizing right now any number wouldn't be up to date for very long, but at the peak I would say I had maybe around 300 incandescent lamps and two hundred or so fluorescent tubes.

As for the fixtures it was probably around fifteen fluorescent fixtures at the peak, now down to six or seven.

My HID fixtures are:

* Sylvania R37
* CGE M400
* Westinghouse Canada OV-20
* Westinghouse RMA
* Westinghouse VanGuard III
* Sylvania S5-400C
* Cheap hardware store H39 area light
* Some plexiglass wallpack I don't remember the brand of. Used to be 347V S68, now with a 120V ballast for the same lamp.
* Appleton Baymaster C, M58, changed the original 347V ballast for a multi-tap one.
(I have more of these than I thought...  :poof:  )

And my collection of HID lamps has been the same for almost ten years now. I would say I've got 60 to 70 lamps or so overall.

This list is bound to shrink. Incandescents and fluorescents are easy enough to donate to the neighbourhood's non-profit thrift store. HID stuff, especially the fixtures, are going to be trickier. Still need to think about it...

I mean I've got plenty of space downstairs in the garage so I've naturally gathered a lot of tubes and lamps, definitely lost count of them but my guess is in the 1300-1400s, they are all extremely usable, 99% are tri-phosphor tubes from reputable brands. I'll just say 'lots' .. I'm not even going to try to count them.
Between all the different sizes & colors, its gotta be in the hundreds.
(most of them ofcourse are just common/nothing-special stuff...but those are there to be used)

I still have all but 2 of my 8 foots and only a few of the 2 foots left that I once used all over the house!
Same with my little 8watts that were all under my kitchen units, only a handful of working ones remain now.
Although I do have quite a few five foot BC tubes I acquired after I stopped using using linear fluorescent lamps!🤨
My bulk of fluorescent lamps I have now, and that are all in full time use are my army of CFLs 😎

 :laugh: I’m so glad I’m not the only one who hoards tubes and other bulbs lol!

All of mine are very high quality too, all are tri-phosphor, I’ve got lots of new in cartoon 840 and 940 and those are my favorite colour, perfect for great vision! I think I have 3-4 boxes of brand new unused 840 tubes! Lots of 830 too! All very reputable brands, Philips TL-D Super 80’s, Aura Ultimate, Luma Long Life, Osram Lumilux, Sylvania Activa (100RA tubes!) :) I also have a fair number of freezer tubes which are perfect for winter use! Aura Ultimate Thermo Long Life, and they really are long life! They have a truly amazing lifetime rating! :3

I've now an Osram Lumilux HE 21W/865 lamp made in Italy lighting my room and an Osram Smartlux T5 HE 21W/865 SL lamp made in China as a spare.
Also: I've four Philips TL Mini 8W Actinic BL lamps made in Poland for my bug zapper, and 6 unused Chinese FSL Actinic BL T5 6W lamps
I don't collect linear fluorescent lamps, because of their length.

Unfortunately the spreadsheet I made where I count all my lamps was accidentally deleted. So I have estimates only.

50+ fluorescent tubes, 3ft and above (T12, T8, T5, 21w T5 to 40w T12)
30+ fluorescent tubes, below 3ft (T12, T10, T8, T5, T4, 10w T12 to 20w T12)
20+ fluorescent tubes, below 1ft (T5, T4, 4w to 8w)
30+ PL lamps (Pl-S, Pl-C, Pl-L, 5w to 36w)
20+ CFL Lamps (Spiral and stick, 3w to 45w)
10+ CCFL lamps (Thin 2mm diameter tubes, cold cathode)

10+ Incandescents 100w and above (General and reflector)
20+ Incandescents below 100w (General and Reflector)
30+ Mini Incandescents (Battery powered, from toy)
15+ Halogens (Dichroic and Bare Capsule)

6 MV (5 white, 1 BLB) 125w-400w
1 SBMV (white) 160w
18 MH (D, CD, ND, WW, pink, green, blue) 35w-400w
14 HPS (clear and coated) 70w-400w

10+ Neons (4w and 1/4w)
1 Flash lamp (Purple)

Totals (Approx):
