When I was asleep at my room at my father home, suddenly, at 4:00, there was a huge flash outside, and the RCD/GFCI of my father, tripped.
What can cause this problem?

A short circuit somewhere on the power line? Can cause RCD trip especially with some MOVs between line/neutral and ground connected downstream.

We of course are not talking about some classified weapons, don't we?  ;)
