If you don't know, I am a big fan of HID lighting, and I want to know the best brands. : MH: (even though I'm not a big fan of them) LPS:

I've always seen the longest life out of the Sylvania brand for HID, compact fluorescent, fluorescent, and most (not all) incandescent applications.

Let me correct myself. not always for all. GE used to have very good fluorescent and HID bulbs when it came to overall life. I have not tried Philips HID lamps lately but there are a few 70W & 100W high pressure sodium fixtures that were installed at a few of my church buildings in the late 80s and early 90s that came with Phillips HPS bulbs in the fixture and they seemed to have held up very well, giving on average I would estimate 25,000+ hours of life before burning out and in most cases taking the ballasts with them

My parents have a 100 watt HPS in an older 1970's Westinghouse Vanguard. The lamp is a GE and was installed in the late 1990's or early 2000's (I don't remember exactly). Still going strong in dusk-to-dawn service, shows no sign of letting go. The former lamp would extinguish every time a big load (furnace, water pump) would switch on.

Now everythings gone to China, it dosen`t leave much choice, but Philips have, and are still, the best manufacturer of SOX lamps, (Thron and GEC were also great brands, but all gone now). As with Halides, theirs only Sylvania that are not PRC made, not sure about the others.
Thorns MBIF halides were the best in their day, then GE took over and they remaind good lamps until they went PRC.

I have 1 Sylvania MetalArc 175w probe start MH and it is NOT made in China. The 's however, were made in China. However, the arc tube is of US design
