Reason you could see under MV may be due to it being dimmed out.....a brand new MV would look good......

I like all MV and MH lamps, I like the crisp white light that they produce and visibility at night. I see much clearer at night on streets with MH streetlights than with HPS streetlights.

HPS seems more useful during winter and under heavy fog.

Don't forget, then in lot of MV lanterns still working today, lamps are there way long after their EOL, so very dimmed out.
The main advantage of MV (and LEDs as well) is becoming the disadvantage: The End Of useful Life on MV is, when their output drop to 70% and not complete "death", so nobody relamp, as "it still work"...
When i installed my yard light, i got a question (from a guy taking care of the lighting in the village) what lamp is there, as it was white and bright. The answer, then 80W MV, surprised him, as he was used to way more dimmer 125watters. When i ask, when they relamp last time, he did not remember, even when he does this work there for more then 20years. So instead of buying new lamps for ~$15 each, they replace fixtures by new 2*58W CFL for ~$130 each, while getting the same system efficacy...

Its a tough call between clear and coated, I like clear the more I use it like sometimes 2 clear ones or a clear and coated, but I like to light my room  with both and 1 HPS sometime 2 HPS and some fluorescent/cfl.
HPS is terrible in my oppinion for roads, since I drive now! when i was younger I actually thought HPS lasted longer than MV lol. Then I realized they really don't.
My preference
1: MV clear/coated
2: CMH
3: probe start MH
4: pulse start MH
5: LPS
6: HPS

My preference:
1 HPS
2 coated MV
3 clear MV
4 MH
5 LPS

I use HPS and MV the most.  HPS has always served me wall and provides good visibility in heavy snow conditions, and I like the gold light.  I like the colour of light provided by coated MV bulbs, however also like being able to see the insides of clear bulbs.  I also have some fixtures who's glass refractors look really sharp with clear MV light.  MH has good light quality, but I don't look forward to cleaning up an exploded bulb.  LPS is fascinating, but getting hard to come by, and the monochromatic light isn't always ideal.
