;D The self ballasted ones are a perfect drop in replacement for standard fittings, no control gear needed, along with a longer lamp life. As an added bonus you can use the self ballasted unit in a standard ballasted fitting too. Gives a slightly better colour rendition, more red added. Unfortunately I think they are only available in 230V versions, most commonly 160W, to replace a 125W MV.

More relaxing to walk by than HPS or MHs. Brighter to see at night but are easy on the eyes.

Why I like LEDs on top of other lighting tech?
LEDs = Upgrade 95% of the applications. (That is if you avoid eBay's LEDs).

LED brainwash? No, people uses them cuz they work well for them.

Well-made older MV lamps proved themselves as being one of the longest-lasting, most reliable light sources ever created. Some lamps are still burning with over 100,000 hours! No ignitor replacement, ballast failures are rare, and lamps are relatively uncomplicated and inexpensive. Plus back in the day you could choose from all those great phosphor options for a rainbow of colors. I still love the unique color of a clear mercury lamp, though.

MH produce a superb fireworks display when they die, unlike MV which just sit there glowing with a pathetic vomit-green dim light!

Although they can be sometimes be tricky to start in cold weather, once lit, their light output isn't affected by the cold (unlike fluorescent/CFL).

The control gear is relitively simple.  Even junk chinese ballasts for MV are more reliable than junk chinese ballasts for HPS or pulse-start MH.

I want ......  BOOM!

not ......  BARF!

 ;)

But, joking aside, I actually prefer MBF (MV with phosphor) because they have a brilliant white light and if you look at it from a distance has a cool blue ring around the light.
