The bans are 1000% A form of tax on you. They take your quality of life in exchange for spyware powering data centers. every watt you don't consume can power some AI algorithms ability to process the 20+ photos that Flock camera you passed took of your car. Same reason for all the more efficient (but junk) appliances, and heating cooling systems. They would let old lighting NATURALLY PHASE OUT like it has done many times before with Carbon arc, incandescent, mercury, sodium.... but it would happen too slowly for the agendas at play. I am treading carefully to avoid politics or tinfoil hat territory.

I agree with you 100%. The enshittification in basically every type of product only really affects consumers. $40,000 pro monitors and GPUs are better than ever and there has been a massive divergence in pro and consumer electronics of all types since just after 2008 financial crisis. At least that's when i noticed it begin to ramp up with TV and monitor backlights. For the first time in the history of TVs or monitors, an inferior technology replaced a better one. Triphosphor WCG-CCFL backlights are actually really good for a monitor or TV since they have peaks in R, G and B. WLEDs were TERRIBLE backlights and mostly still are because of the blue spike and lump of green-orange. Pro monitors continued to use WCG-CCFL or RGB LED backlights though.

This was also around the time when consumers were forced to use terrible light bulbs.

You're right about appliances! I recently needed a new oven/range on short notice and didnt do enough due diligence fist. I bought what was supposedly the replacement for my 2006 GE Profile. Its a total POS. Has a plastic touch screen with coil whine only i can hear in my household. Cheap, thin, not clearcoated stainless steel. It also has a wifi radio that can't be disabled without taking the oven apart and voiding the warranty! Just what no one needs: a hackable oven!

I didnt know Haier had bought out GEs appliance division. And whats worse is that this is actually one of the nicer ranges available for around the price range of my old one!

Its not tin foil hat to say that everything is getting worse: cars, electronics, light bulbs and particle board multi storey apartments!

In a better world, violet pump LEDs would become the norm due to their superior spectra to blue pump while still having way better luminous efficacy than incandescents. Instead it looks like those and even reasonably good affordble blue pumps like Philips UD will get banned in favor of low CRI junk!

I wonder what kind of lighting the people who make these rules use. Im guessing a walk in closet full of incandescent bulbs exists in at least one of their mansions. The people who push these rules also fly private and have massive carbon footprints usually.

So my understanding is that this will not make all LED bulbs illegal to sell, but less efficient higher CRI ones including UV pumped models will be illegal to sell since those don't typically make it to the 120 lpw requirement. I'm really hoping this doesn't actually go in to effect. I'm wondering if it may be worth reaching out to some of the more mainstream consumer rights activists who could potentially bring more attention to this.

I agree completely. I go dumpster diving a lot and the amount of appliances I find that have been discarded and are fixable (or at least can be modified to be usable again) because of a very basic component failing or other design flaw that could be remedied is very depressing. Most of what I own was acquired this way, but considering I live in a low income area and find things discarded for this reason all the time I can't help but think how things that don't last even 5 years is yet another unnecessary and intentional financial burden on working class people.

 @Lumex120  :  I agree Sam .  I'll fix things 'till there's either nothing left to fix or it's not cost effective to fix .  A lot of people just have no desire to even attempt to repair anything . If it breaks,  replace it . A lot of municipalities especially ! Years ago , I worked on an ambulance of which the driver accidentally backed into a large , low hanging tree branch in someone's driveway . It crunched the corner of the full length lightbar on the rear of the truck . I looked at it and told the cheif " Easy fix , shouldn't take too much to repair it " His answer : "Hell with it , Replace it , I'm not paying for it " So I put a brand new , $3,000 dollar lightbar on the truck !! I was given the old one. Once I got it home it took me longer to dig thru my stash of old parts and find what I needed than it did to fix the bar !

This will also eliminate quite a few of the decorative/edison style filament LEDs sold today which will likely fail to meet 120lm/W+. As for the ones that do survive, they'll probably end up with a higher CCT to meet the requirement, so say goodbye to 1800K-2500K.
