You've re-rekindled my interest once more... I am curious as to what type of connector goes in that slot at the top of those ballasts... is it just an ordinary automotive connector??
yeah its an IP rated automotive connector. As for the output it's HV rated silicon cable with a split connection to handle the pulse needed to start the lamp.

Yep those are waterproof automotive connectors. I've used them on my LED driving lights since the wiring is partially exposed.
