So, I have recently acquired this 2000W Quartz-Halogen Stage/Studio bulb, it uses a GY16 bi-pin base, runs at standard 120 volts and is said to give off an incredible 55000 lumens at a 3200K color temperature (meaning the filament itself is operating at 2926 degrees C.)

It's supposed to be used in those expensive high-end Fresnel lens reflectors.
The rated life is just 400 hours.


My question is, has anyone seen one of these in operation? How bright is a 55000lm incandescent lamp really?
If I were to fire it up in the center of my dorm room, would it act as small powerful space heater?

You will need more than the 15A circuits that are in your dorm room. For resistive loads, 15A circuits have a theoretical limit of 1875 watts. For more than a momentary use, you don’t want to exceed 80% of that. And yes, it would throw considerable heat all the while increasing the power bill.

While I haven't exactly seen a full 2kW lamp in person, I have seen a 4*500W array which, well, it's certainly bright. The ones I'm familiar with are T3s, but yeah, it would definitely function as a space heater and a rather hot one at that. IMO 400 hours is a bit on the longer side but I may be wrong. For context, a standard 2700K 9W LED would give somewhere around 875lm.

PS. definitely don't fire it up in the center of your dorm room; other than possibly starting a fire, could cause photo-keratitis (halogens emit a decent amount of UVA/UVB/maybe UVC) if run unshielded which is a not a very fun thing to experience.

I am highly skeptical any practically relevant amount of UVC is radiated. Anyway, one will get a thermal burn before any chance of UVA/B reaction ;)

So in practice, some UVC is radiated, but is very weak, power at 250nm is about 2.5 orders magnitude weaker than visible light spectral power at 550nm, and ~3 orders weaker than NIR at peak wavelength of circa 800mn.

If your dorm room has access to 220V outlets, you probably could run this lamp off of a step down transformer as 220V circuits should have up to 3300W of power capacity at 15A.
