Moving my workshop ... « on: December 10, 2020, 01:00:08 PM » Author: Proteus
Hi guys

I just wanted to share my current situation with you - And would like to know if you ever had similar situations in your life.

So, I could rent a very nice workshop in our near city Biel/Bienne since almost two years now, for a very low price. I have all my lamps, fixtures, electrical stuff, a lot of car parts and a hell lot of other stuff there. Since approximately six months, I have the impression that everything is arranged fine in there and I can work nicely on my cars and with all my lamps. To see a picture: https://www.lighting-gallery.net/gallery/displayimage.php?album=1595&pos=2&pid=159263 - This was May 2019, when I installed my 8-footers in there. This spot is just a little bit of total approx. 100m2 / 1070sqft.

Two weeks ago, I received an E-Mail from the owner of this house where my workshop is. It says that this house will be sold in 02/2021 and it will be demolished in 05/2021. Now I'm looking hard to find anything comparable. Here in Switzerland, it is unfortunately like this that it is very expensive to rent rooms - To have the same size of workshop, I would have to pay almost three times of that what I pay at the moment - And this is way too expensive for me.

So, if there is no way to find a room until April 2021, I need to move all my lamp stuff into my garage, and there it will be just stored. No lamp tests, no more other work with my lights. And I own around 2000 fluorescents, around 1000 other light bulbs, a lot of streetlights, a lot of fluorescent

It just makes me sad to leave this nice location.

Did anyone of you ever had something like this before?

This may not help but maybe its an idea to consider someday, I've seen people make shops out of old shipping containers. If you have a yard or something you can spring one up. Not as easy as renting at first but at least it's yours. Assuming you own a home already.

Good Idea - But there we are coming to the next point. I am living in a big house with 10 good friends together. We have a lot of space around the house, but there‘s no location to use all my tools and machines, or the lamps. Additionally, The whole house has just 3x400V 25A - Sufficient for the house itself, but nothing more.

As well, we are here for rent, it doesn‘t belong to us and there are plans to demolish / whatelse as well one time. May be in a year, maybe in two or three - No one knows. And I cannot occupy all the place just for my collection :(

That’s the sad point here in Switzerland, old buildings are going to be demolished quite quickly
making space for new modern boring developments or in the other hand old structures are being sold very expensive in the meaning of preserving it historically.

Marc, wouldn't be possible to rent a work space with other friends which are also interested in remodeling cars? Then you may would have enough space for the lamps...?
