It was hard for me to remember but it was that GE M250R2 outside my window.

Long Live SOX!
|
My earliest memory is of a 2 or 3 year old me looking out the living room window, just as the Eleco GoldenRay 535 fired up its SOX lamp. It was soon after replaced by a Philips SGS101 'StreetFighter' on a new column. This is what it looked like before it was replaced (not the exact one).

I don't recall the make or model, I was only about 4 or 5. But I do remember it was a 500W incandescent, it was at the time they were changing them out for mercury vapour lamps. I won't say the year, it'll reveal my antiquity

Long live the HPS and SOX!
|
I’m not totally sure about the first one I ever saw, but my earliest memory of being interested in a street light is probably from when I was 2 or 3. I remember always being interested in the 175w and 100w HPS fixtures around the town where I lived in Massachusetts, I only remember the NEMA tags clearly though so I’m not sure exactly what fixtures they were. Most likely GEs, maybe M-250R2s or M-250R1s since they were common in that area. The second oldest memory I have after that is from when I was about 5, when I used to go down to the train station with my dad so he could get to work in Boston. When we met him at the train after work in the winter, I would always watch the HPS cobraheads across the street starting up. I focused on one Cooper OVX 400w HPS that I found most interesting for some reason. Here they are on street view, apparently they’ve been replaced with LED. https://goo.gl/maps/kh8mqAPjhyuJY1pR6Admin edit: long link shortened

I’ve always been interested in all kinds of lighting, mainly incandescent and HID, and especially all kinds of sodium lamps (HPS/LPS). I’ll tolerate LED but I’m not a fan of it. I’m not proud to say that my city has Devolved to LED.

That is great! Boston is still a special place of taking photos of street lights.

Cool! Hopefully I’ll be able to make it back to Boston for a week next year (right now that’s the plan) and I’ll check out the lighting everywhere I can of course!

I think this tree mounted light was one of the earlist streetlights I remember. I do remember the luminaire being something other than a 115 though, looked more like a Sylvania R37.
It sounds like Boston are one of the places still with a lot of HID lighting. Toronto is still kind of like that now but they've been slowly changing areas over to LED in the past two years. Still have long strings of HPS and MH as far as the eye can see though.

Probably the 100w HPS American Electric 113 that was outside my house. I remember it shining through my bedroom window when I was a little kid and I thought the color was really nice. I actually ended up getting that very same fixture for my collection back in 2018 when they changed out to LED.

SRP for life.

I live on a dirt road out in the woods. There was a MV NEMA head (don't remember the model, as I wasn't into street lighting back then) that was on the second road from my house. I used to call it the "Vern's Light" because the guy who lived there was named Vern. It was replaced in 2017 by an Evluma AreaMax.

While I do remember our mercury lamps growing up in the 70s, I only started to take note of street lighting when we lost our mercury lamps for SOX in Thorn top entry Beta Fives in the summer of 1980, I think my interest in street lighting started like most people in the UK with the low pressure sodium lamp

Same with us, until HPS replaced Mercury in the late '80s.

The 113s were all over NYC before the OVZ special came out.
