I have a 36w fluorescent tube that no longer lights up however the cathode filaments still emit the distinctive bluish yellow arcs that I've seen in other EOL tubes. I plan to do the EOL by running the tube in a fixture until the cathodes stop working. I'm thinking of trying it with a 40w ballast so I get more action but just want to see what safety precautions I should take so I don't accidently pop the tube and shower glass everywhere.

I think that cathode is broken and there is some discharge between the broken ends of the cathode.

Run it with an instant-start ballast on a frequently switched circuit.

HID Fixtures should stay HID, but I think LED is fine too.
