Pole Brands Used in Your Area? « on: August 24, 2022, 12:40:47 AM » Author: joseph_125
Something that came to mind, over here it seems like most poles in use are manufactured by local companies.

Anyway here's most of the brands of concrete and metal poles I've seen around here:

Concrete:
Stress-Crete (Burlington, ON)
Utility Structures Inc (Ottawa, ON)
Barratt  (Defunct, acquired by Stress-Crete)

Aluminum/Steel:
Luminous (Bolton, ON)
Polefab (Sharon, ON)
AMG Metals (Sharon, ON)
Thomas and Betts (Unknown)
SSW (Brampton, ON)
Valmont Structures Canada (Barrie, ON)
Powco (Defunct, Barrie, ON)
Powerlite/Sylvania (Defunct)
Joslyn/Lacal (Acquired by Polefab)

This is from what I've seen.

Steel:

Union Metal (Canton, OH)
Pacific Union Metal (PUMCO - a division of Marbelite, I believe their main HQ was in Long Beach, Calif.; may have been acquired by Ameron)
Weld-Rite (Oakland, Calif.)
Valmont (Valley, NE)
Ameron (now part of NOV, not sure where their main office is)

Concrete:
Marbelite (Los Angeles, Calif.)
Pacific Union Metal
Ameron

If I got any of this information wrong, feel free to correct me.

Here across many utilities and parking lots, etc we have Millerbernd, Union metal, Sheakspeare, Hapco, and Valmont. Those are the most common.

LED street lights are bad. Some look good though. HID is better.
Please, watch out for the future. It's not looking good. Loves instruction manuals of any kind!

Stress-Crete, Union, Valmont, Ameron are very common, and a concrete pole brand name that I don't know what the name is called is the most common.

To be honest, I've never paid attention to the brands of poles.  :wndr:

All our concrete have gone now, but they were dominated by CU (concrete utilities), and Stanton, one housing estate in our town, built in the early 80s still has its Thorn aluminium columns, but now carrying Urbis Ampera’s instead of the original Alpha 4s!
The oldest columns in our town are the 1960s GECs along Chester Road, still in service to this day with their original outreach arms!
They used to carry the linear sodium lamps from my childhood, but are sadly now ‘spoiled’ by more Ampera’s!, but I am glad these ‘old soldiers’ that I grew up with, and that sparked my interest in street lighting, are still today lighting our little town!  :D

All the concretes in my area are Stantons. Might have something to do with being really close to the old Stanton & Stavely conrete column factory :wndr:

Digging through some old photos of our town this morning I was chuffed to find one of our Stanton 7A swan necks pre-SOX era, when they still carried mercury lamps!  :D

Interesting to hear of all the different pole brands used. I've never really paid much attention to pole brands in the past but I've started noticing them walking around the different neighbourhoods. It also helps that more pole manufacturers here often proudly labelled their products with a name plate around the hand hole level or 4-5ft off the ground.
