Those have got to be the ugliest, most unnatural-looking signals I have ever seen. 

Anyone know what brand of signal these are? They've been up since 2015 and still look brand new. They're LED, but the good kind. Streetview

What grinds my gears about those LED traffic signals:

When 90% of the entire array is dead and you can hardly tell the light is on. Especially when it's been gradually progressing to that over the last year.
Thankfully there are others to cue off (in case you didn't see which ones are and are not working) but come on. Please don't tell me they bought into the "LED lasts forever" thing.

Otherwise, is it just me or are there more dead traffic lights with the "modern LED retrofit" than before?
Same as the LED tubes, I see way too many dead LED tubes than I did fluorescents.

I once saw an led traffic signal with more than half the diodes dead. Surprisingly, I got a 10 year old decommissioned one, and all leds were working.

I've seen some that were half out but never something more. I think the main advantage with those older LED modules was that they tended to only partially burn out which means part of the signal is still visible. Newer LED modules have a smaller LED array which tends to burn out completely.

When LED signals first came out, those LED look signals were all that was available. Later on, incandescent look LED signals became more popular and later replaced all the LED look signals. I don't think you can even buy circular LED look signals for the North American market.

One disadvantage of the incandescent look LED modules is that they require fairly deep modules, in order to accommodate the internal optics that allow for even illumination. Because of that the modules are around as deep as the incandescent reflector assemblies they replaced. The LED look modules are fairly slim, and can use much thinner signal housings. You can see that in some signals outside of North America, which still use the LED look style modules.

I think in older signals, the leds weren't as bright as modern ones, so they put more of them. When high output leds came, they could put fewer leds and it would be the same brightness.

If I need heat and light, I will rather use incondescent lightbulb (much easier and cheaper to make too) then some LED with builtin heater, because what about flicker, who will take care about that?
