Why do people honk at crosswalks? « on: March 30, 2025, 02:54:53 PM » Author: Cole D.
Here we have the crosswalk at the front of store for pedestrians to cross the road, it’s mandatory by law that you have to yield to the pedestrians. I always stop at these, if people are crossing, or about to cross.

But sometimes when I cross them, I have people honk at me or they try to drive around me, or they see me crossing but just keep driving. I don’t understand it, because I walk quite fast.

Just this weekend, I going into Walmart, and I heard a car make two short honks as I’m crossing.

I even while back had someone almost knock me down at the crossing, they turned very tightly into me, and I stumbled and my hand hit the back window of their suv. That made me quite nervous as I was afraid they might get out and try to hurt me, but thankfully nothing happened.

All I can say people are just impatient nowadays and if they’re  in vehicle they think to makes them more important than on foot.

That said, I was driving home Friday night, and on last road before I turn onto my street, two teen were walking in the road as I came around curve. They saw me coming but still didn’t move out of road, thankfully I was watching carefully. I had to wait for oncoming car to pass so I could go around them in opposite lane, they did not move out of road at all.

In the UK, usually people don't honk but they just won't stop their car when your about to cross. They just think they are alone on the road  :DeAtH:. It's best to not cross the crossing when a car pulls up because they might drive you other and/or honk at you...because they're probably on their phones while driving  :curse: even though it's their fault, they believe it's your fault, when it's not, it'$ them  >:(. I think they should put some camera's on the crossing, especially in England where they use 5700k streetlights to light the crossing. Just to say, if you see someone on their phone while driving near a pedestrian crossing, just report it somewhere, this might be useless info but most people nowhere days (Especially in UK) have their phone on while driving.

Usually I collect bulbs (Mostly LED) and some HID ones. I also own a couple of streetlights, but most are made in Poland.

However, I mostly prefer SOX bulbs. LED bulbs in their efficacy will never beat SOX bulbs, in my opinion.

Well, you just have to bare with these type of people, I have no clue who has something wrong with their head, standing in the middle of a cross walk. A cross walk is to cross a road with cars stopping to let cross the road, not to stand on a cross walk. Any of these people want to stand on a cross walk, play a video game and do it there.  :curse: boils me when these people do that, and that's probably of gaming, when they do stupid things on those games... :curse:

I was already halfway across crosswalk when they came up and honk though, I too have had vehicle keep driving when I’m already in crosswalk, they won’t even make eye contact, when I see them go by, they’re just looking straight ahead.

I did see sometime back I was going into Goodwill, a man walking across another crosswalk nearby, and I guess a vehicle did not stop for him and he started yelling and cursing them out, using some VERY colorful names.  >:D Though that’s how I feel inside about it too at times!  :mrg:

People here in US have phone on often too while driving. I even see holding it while driving, even though it is technically illegal to do it. And of course they’re not paying attention.

I won’t even make phone calls on Bluetooth hands free when I’m driving, as I find it too distracting to try to drive and taking and listening at once. I even have trouble talking to others in the car when driving because I usually drive alone.

Some people are just particularly stupid.

There is a cycle crossing combined with a speed hump near me, where cars have to yield to cyclists. I love it when they approach too fast, which means they have to brake at the last moment, loading up their front suspension while rolling onto the speed hump. Always makes a satisfying 'clunk' or 'crunch' when they do. They only have to approach too fast one single time to learn...

It doesn't get bad enough to puncture an oil pan, but there are some decent gouges in the speed hump lol.

Fortunately, this don't happening here in Israel, but the Israeli driver uses to honk when someone blocking them.

I have never experienced this in Australia or New Zealand, nor have I seen it happen to anyone else here. Things must be pretty bad over your way, with a lot of people with serious anger issues who probably shouldn't be driving, nor owning weapons.

Ugh, people...

Around here they act pretty much like across the Atlantic in England; they just ignore pedestrians and as one it's wise to expect drivers not to enforce your priority at crossings, though if you recklessly force your way they'll USUALLY stop, without honking. But I wouldn't count on it!  :o

At traffic lights things aren't as bad. Drivers follow the pedestrian signals for the most part.

I used to watch bad driver compilations and good Lord! What is wrong with drivers in the US??  :poof:  In Quebec the biggest problem is old, confused drivers. They're not aggressive, they just don't know where the f?$* they're going! And taxis... well they do taxi things. ::)

It's also wise here as a pedestrian not to just assume that drivers will stop for a pedestrian on a crossing who has right-of-way, but I've never experienced nor witnessed actual aggression (e.g. blasting the horn) from a car driver who's having to stop for a pedestrian who's legally crossing at a designated crossing.

I've seen plenty of aggression from pedestrians (including me giving it) aimed towards drivers who actually continue driving into the crossing after the pedestrian has already started walking across it.

Sometimes it's due to inattention from the driver but usually just sheer bloody-mindedness.

We currently have 3 buildings at work . 2 are pretty close to each other and the 3rd , my building , is about 1/4 mile away . Going from the main plant to our "southwest" plant requires crossing the street . One of our genius HR people told us at one point " you don't need to wait , just cross , you have the right of way . The cars have to stop for you " YEAH RIGHT !!! I'll be DAMNED if I'mm gonna be hit and possibly killed trying that one !

Sometimes if I see vehicles coming, I slow down so it forces them to drive on before I reach the crosswalk, or if I’m coming across the sidewalk I just walk parallel to the crosswalk until they go by, and then I cross once they’re gone.

In England here, we have to build traffic lights on main roads as if there would be a pedestrian crossing, people would not stop their vehicle to let them cross through!!! Though, this is why we have traffic lights for people to cross, as pedestrian crossings would not work. At minor roads, we still have pedestrian crossings, but still people do not stop, unless if its a child with a parent, otherwise, if they could, you would crash into you if you would be alone crossing a pedestrian crossing... UK drivers just don't know how to drive, let's have an example, the limit is 40mph, they drive 25mph. The limit is 50mph, they drive 40mph, ITS ANNOYING TO BE HONEST!!! And also, they can be so annoying that they drive slow when you cannot overtake and when there is a chance to overtake, they speed up, and slow down again when there is no chance to overtake. Common thing in UK drivers, same goes to pedestrian crossings, they don't stop, just drive through on purpose. They also go past through RED LIGHTS!!

Useless info but in the UK, when you have a pathway for the cyclist and a pathway for pedestrian, the goddamn cyclist drive on the road instead of the path. It sort of makes be sad for the workers that had to take their time to build a pathway for the cyclists, and the cyclists prefer the road instead of the path made for them. It also boils the drivers. People hate cyclists. The only people who like cyclists are the people who are cyclists. Most cyclists are like in their 60s 70s and drive on the road dressed up like they are in a olympic competition! Usually when I'm on my bike, I usually get off the road when a vehicle is upcoming behind me, but no, the UK cyclists won't because they think they are alone on the road  :curse: :curse: :curse: :curse: :curse:

I've never seen that happen here, but plenty of dimwit bogans in their monster-truck Ute's flying past you on a crossing if you're out of their lane!  ::)
