How easy it is to repair an incondecent lightbulb « on: May 12, 2025, 03:24:33 AM » Author: veso266
I know I am crazy for even thinking this but in todays forfecull world fill with bans and regulations (that I dont like), its not exacly easy to just toss your old incondecent lightbulb into trash and get into the nearest store and get a new one

So I was wondering if anyone attempted to repair one

On the surface it seams easy, u just drill a hole somewhere, replace the thungston inside, then reseal the lamp

But I am not sure what kind of equipment would one need for this, and where its the best place to drill a hole

The weird thing is that even on youtube, noone ever attempted this
They repair led bulbs: https://youtu.be/btBmE-PZ5ig
https://youtu.be/eaVjGBQ6uYE

There are backyard people that remake flurescent signs: https://youtu.be/m4_tTfXiwdw

If u already have equipment to make neon signs, it seams u have everything u need to repair an incondecent lightbulb, but noone ever attempted this on youtube

Why? Is there some hidden hurdle u need to overcome

I would understand making new incondecent bulb is hard, cuz u need to blow and shape glass, but even that seams is in reach of backyard people, cuz, people do make tubes: https://youtu.be/-UEfqAWb3fE (which are almost the same as incondecent lightbulbs (u need to seal them, u need to shape glass, they use thungston, just like with incondecent lightbulbs)

Now for someone like me that doesnt even have equipment and expirience with working with glass, this is probably out of reach but its interesting that even people that have equipment never attempted this (even if they will never use them, just for the sake of youtube likes and view count)

What about CFL bulbs, would this be easier to fix for someone like me, what usualy fails in there, and how would one identify a fixable fault from something that u need expensive equipment to fix?

Regular lightbulbs are made from soft glass with high coefficient of expansion. So it is not trivial to make a hole with a burner and close it then. It will crack and shatter all around. Possible, but with a great care. Not worth the efforts.

When do u say, not worth the efford (of course for someone like me that dont even have equipment for glass, let alone expirience, thats probably true)  (back in the day, when u could get every kind of incondecent bulb imaganable it was easier to buy then repair)

But nowadays its not easy to buy anymore, even in bosnia

I was in bosnia in Bihać in we have everything store called Zeka: https://youtu.be/ro0DgjtO4aw

Because I dont know any special lightbulb store there

And they didnt have frosted 75W one (they did have clear 75W ones but no frosted ones)

Even tried a regulat store (meanimg they are like super market, they have everything including food) called Bingo, and its the same story there (clear ones they have, frosted ones they dont)

I know I could import from china but, importing has a big problem (u order 3 bulbs, 2 come broken. They fortionatly give u ur money back, I didnt even attempt yet to order big flurescent tubes from china

So thats why I always want to get things in person in physical store, whenever I can)

I would even dare to say, given the soft glass properties, making a new lightbulb is easier than repairing existing one!

We had fluorescent tube recyclers in the '80s. They would get eol 4ft 40w T12 tubes, and by cutting one of them and sealing a cathode from another lamp, they would have a functional 3ft 30w, 2ft 20w, 1½ft 15w or even 1ft 10w tube.

We also had people who repaired incandescents. They would loosen the base of the bulb, break the seal from there, and replace the entire bottom half of the bulb with a normal GLS one. The main purpose here was to repair a special reflector/frosted lamp by using a normal lamp, not repair a normal bulb.

I BELIEVE @Joe Maurath, Jr. has done simmilar things, restoring lamps. I'm not 100% sure though.

Does Bosnia allow imports from China?, I bet the Chinese are still making thousands of them?
The repair thing is not possible with tungsten lamps as, even if you could somehow drill the glass bulb, you still need vacuum pumps and gassing machinery for the argon dosage!
I’ve seen crude lamps being made from jam jars using carbon wire and vacuuming it out, but these were just wacky experiments and didn’t tend to last long?
