400 Watt Ael 115 « on: November 03, 2025, 02:47:51 PM » Author: stillaintjeff24
I was looking for a ael 115 when it occurred to me, they offered a 400 watt sodium model of the 115, but I have never seen one in service, online, or in person. Were they ever made, or is it just super uncommon because Ael 125s and Ge M-400s are more versatile and viable?

First notice that it is only offered with reactor gear, and only for 208/240V. This is simply because it may not be possible to fit in any other 400W gear

Then, dissipating nearly 300W of heat (figure sucked out of thumb, considering +40W losses of 400W reactor, -80W exiting the luminaire as light, and some unknown power exiting as IR), may be just too much for an enclosure of the size of an AEL 115. This means that if may be overheating and not last long, and quickly getting replaced to something else

So it is clearly not a preferrable option. An "400W" size lantern like an 125 would be much better on both accounts

Yeah, that’s crazy! I guess I didn’t read closely enough to see the ballast matrix for the 400 watt sodium. Still crazy, I bet it is super rare to see a 400 watt 115 in the wild!

Hey, would you know why it says for Hps products only? It says it on every cobra-head so far from ael? It is in the notes, does it mean Mh was discontinued at some point?

This refers to something else in the document that got the "2" comment reference. It is in the "Starter" option

I just noticed, in the cutoff variation of the ordering sheet, it has High Reactance Ballast Models as well, even the high power factor variant too. I wonder why the drop lens has less options than the Fco Model.

I think that if you do happen to get a 240V 60Hz version, you might be able to hook it up to split phase 240V 60Hz.

Probably right! I wonder if there is any 400 watt model in existence. It seems so rare. If someone ever found one, it would probably be worth a bit!

I was given a 115 built with a 250 watt ballast and sometime someone shoved a 400 watt gear in it and lamp to match the B2255 400 watt the rest of the yard had
the lamp was far to big and nearly touched the far side of the bowl and the choke was hitting the door when closed

I have run UK electronic ballasted fitting on US style split 240 just fine must be careful on the earthing as there is NO neutral and if the wiring calls for the neutral to body you have 120V body voltage and that is SPICY to the touch !!!!
