is the M 400 still available? Is there any hid cobra head still available for purchase brand new or to order? If there is how do I get one?
I know there are on eBay, but I mean still on a website or to order.

No, the M-400 was discontinued by ~2020. IIRC distributors (like Graybar) stopped offering them around the time production seized.

No idea on other brands though.

Yeah, the last of GEs HID cobras were discontinued in 2020. Cooper discontinued HID cobras in 2024 and AEL discontinued HID cobras in 2022. AFAIK the Lumec Helios was the last HID cobra still made for the USA, and that was discontinued at the end of 2024. Your best chance of getting a new HID cobra from a wholesaler is finding one with some still just sitting on shelves, lost of searching online!

Ok. Thanks, it just stinks. The second I get into hids, the last few are discontinued. It really feels helpless.

Kinda sounds like me getting into streetlights, by Feb 2022, pretty much all of the HID here had been LED'd, oh well, I've got 49 streetlights now, mostly HID, but I do find LED Interesting, so I do find the local stuff interesting. :)

Oh, and there are probably hundreds of NOS HIDs on eBay at the moment, at a fraction of wholsaler or manufacturer prices, I can provide links if you'd like.

Glad that I’m not the only one, when did you get into streetlights, was it 2022?

Ah, were you ever able to order one from cooper or somebody? Or just everybody was already out of hid?

I'm located in Australia, so no American brands over here. I ordered my first lantern directly from the manufacturer earlier this year, which was a LED lantern.

Believe it or not, all of my (then) new GEs came from eBay, Craigslist, and from other collectors here on L-G. You never know when this stuff comes out of the woodwork, just keep your eyes peeled.

Ok. Funny enough your name, econolight, is the exact store I got clearance fluorescent 2x13 can lights from! They were 7 something a piece. You’re right, you never know! And Yes, I know your name is a reference to that store.

living in Canada you could NOT order a "utility" product personally and utility supply houses don't want to deal with customers at all and are largely UTILITY / CONTRACTOR only
that said I have seen many brand new in box lights on fleebay and local marketplace and for FAR LESS than the list price NEW that would be near as $1000 USD for a large cobra
some commercial electrical companies might have "retail" lights in the back room unsold and Granger has/had listings for some AEL products - quick search LED only now
https://ebay.us/m/t7es3s a 125 new in box on fleebay

That seems to be the way with most large manufacturers, usually asking you to go through a wholesaler, which can still have you order a single unit to your specifications, at least over here.

I got an OrangeTEK Ignis Mini to my own specifications (which they had in stock because it was exactly to a large utility's standards who installed thousands of them) strait from the manufacturer, they're still a large company, but not as large as some. I've also inquired about a 49w Ignis 1 from them, which they'd need to make specially for me, that comes in at the exact same price as a 72w unit which is currently in stock in Australia interestingly.
