Is it a “good” idea to run a 175W MV lamp on a 400W MH ballast?

It runs fine on the much higher rated ballast but I would like to know how much this overpowering would shorten the lifespan of the lamp.

Not really, I would expect arc tube bulging and low electrode life at these currents. I think it would significantly reduce the lifespan of the lamp.
