New Lighting Project... Metal Halide lit bathroom?? « on: May 05, 2026, 05:40:54 AM » Author: suzukir122
Although my Light Table project isn't completed yet, (the light tables have not arrived) I've decided to start an additional lighting project.
Very easy project... for my bathroom, I'm going to take out my three Sylvania Dulux 15w CFL's and Panasonic 15w CFL, in favor of four PAR38 CMH
Metal Halide... the GE Self Ballasted PAR38's. I've just bought four 360 sockets, and one additional GE SB PAR38, (I've already got three) so
my plan is to use all four as up-lighting in the bathroom. Should be insanely bright, with pleasant light as well... excellent CRI, 3000k... should
be good for that bathroom. Of course though, my concern is moisture, mainly in terms of the 360 sockets more than the PAR38's, although I'll
also keep an eye on moisture on the PAR38's as well. I take short showers anyways though, so this shouldn't be too big of an issue. All lights are
always on during my showers.
What do you guys think? Bad idea? Good idea?
Also, this should be easier on my eyes when I've woken up during the night to go to the bathroom. I don't mind the brighter light, but I do mind the
more instant light from the previous CFL's. This idea, much like my Light Table idea in my loft, is currently in the works.
I'm debating on going Programmed Start CFL for the bedroom, but specifically just one floor lamp with a 2D 38w CFL.

Well, general lighting metal halides do not like short run cycles in principle and will wear off very quickly. Automotive variety get away somewhat with a special programmed startup sequence on its electronic ballasts and very lightweight electrodes.

How about some really high quality LED PARs in 930 or 940 color for that  purpose?

@RRK, this is also something that I've been thinking about as well... I've had those three PAR38 CMH's for a decent amount of time,
since 2020. Within that time, as much as I hate to say it, I've put all three PAR38's through many short run cycles, especially in
the time I've had them in use in my bedroom, as up-lighting from the floor. Same with my Sylvania Powerball MC20TF/U/GU6.5/830 20w
CMH's... those have also been through many short cycles within the last several years, and as of now they still seem to be going
strong... not to say that it isn't bad to short cycle Metal Halide lamps though... it is... but this makes me wonder whether it's not as
bad to short cycle CMH's, in comparison to the Quartz MH used for general lighting.
I am making plans on stocking up on more GE PAR38 SB CMH's though, just incase this does prove to be a bad idea in terms of life expectancy.
Seems as if there's still a good amount of SB PAR38's available for sale on Ebay as of now, from GE, Philips and even Sylvania.
