Unidentified HPS Cobrahead/ Shoebox Streetlight In Arizona « on: June 01, 2026, 07:01:10 PM » Author: Omnilight37
This particular 250 W HPS Cobrahead is pretty much ubiquitous in Arizona, United States. I haven't seen it anywhere else. This comes in many variations including smaller 10 W options and different paint finishes ranging from light brown to dark black. I haven't seen any of one of these installed after 2021. Do any of you happen to know the model and manufacturer of this series? Thank you.

Might be an AEL Luxmaster fixture of some sort. Would have originally used 250W S50 high pressure sodium lamps before getting cobbed.

Correct. This is the AEL Luxmaster 53. There was a variant that had a pyramid shaped drop dish lens called the "Luxmaster 153".

That is an AEL Luxmaster 153, which is the larger version (150-400w I believe). The 53 is the smaller 100-150w. Both can be spec'd with prismatic drop lenses, and also sag lenses.

Phoenix also used the very similar looking GE TSP, which can be distinguished by there being no lines on the gear door.

Yes, correct. The cities of Tempe and Goodyear used to have thousands, but many have been replaced by GE Evolves. SRP has also used these in the past for illuminating urban areas.

These are actually a very common luminaire. The SeaTac International Airport used lots of these, both on FCO and SCO. CenterPoint Energy in Texas also has lots of them.

@Baked bagel 11 - Didn't know there were ThinScapes in Arizona. Haven't seen any yet. I'll have to keep an eye out.

They all seem to be 150w and 250w HPS, here's a comparison between a 153 and TSP, both 150w (those poles only seem to have 150w luminaires). You can also see the differences in the optical chambers here.

Once you start noticing them, they're everywhere! Mainly as spot replacements.
