In the U.S., there is a bill to raise the minimum wattage from 45 to 120 lumens per watt, and under the act, CFLs and most traditional snowcone LED designs will be banned, and ultra-efficient filament LED lamps will be the primarily lamps to buy.

Because snow cone LEDs are generally not as efficient as filament LEDs and produce more heat, so I don’t think the snow cone LED light bulb will survive. I don’t think light bulbs will disappear as there have been several filament LEDs that met this requirement, like the Philips ultra efficient series or even the U.S.-made Sylvania LEDs sold under their name or Walmart Great Value.

So I think if this takes effect most LEDs will be filament LEDs and not the older snow cone type.

I don’t care about snow cone LEDs. They are outdated, limited optical distribution, and ugly.

The good thing about snow cone LEDs is that they’re plastic and don’t break easily when dropped.

And, they often are more reliable than the filament versions of the same class bulbs (especially for GE and Philips Warm Glow LEDs), but the thing is they don’t provide as good light distribution, they’re not as efficient, and they produce more heat (the heatsink of the snow cone LEDs get pretty hot). The only thing where the traditional design for is good for is for flood lamps (the traditional LED design is most optimal for reflector lamps). Incandescent bulbs have a problem where some of the light leaks upward and some of the light is absorbed to the reflective coating), LED reflector lamps direct pretty much all the light down because the diodes in reflector lamps are very close to the plastic dome on the lamp. That is the reason why a 65W equivalent LED looks brighter than a 65W incandescent despite them both being 650 lumens.

Snow cone lamps with clear domes were awful and I will not miss those. Those had awful light distribution. Probably as bad as the light distribution from faceted lamps. They produced a very directional light, and they looked awful in chandeliers. I’m so glad most companies stopped making them. How is an ugly partially clear bulb with a big white heatsink decorative? They looked even worse than the candelabra CFLs.

Cheap snow cone LEDs are GARBAGE and I don’t care if they go. I don’t care if the 10,000 Dollar snow cone LEDs go. I don’t care for those at all. I don’t think there should even be LED bulbs with a rated lifespan under 15,000 hours. They typically used a plastic thing over the diodes to make the light more onmidirectional but the light often was still directional, and often produced awful spots across walls. I also do not like the traditional design on any decorative lamp. I think all globe-shaped, CA, and B style lamps should be filament types.

I know LED filament reflectors existed but they weren’t probably as good at directing light because the design of incandescent floods was flawed and a lot of the light was concentrated on the sides of the bulb, meaning less light went downward. Filament LEDs are good for omnidirectional lighting and I prefer them much more in decorative fixtures or in fixtures with clear glass shades. Snow cone LEDs are good for trouble lights or in applications where bulbs get broken a lot.

The modern LEDs in my opinion look fine though the early ones were for sure ugly.

Snow cone LEDs seem to be at least marginally better lifespan-wise than filastick LEDs, and that’s likely because the electronics are not confined to the minuscule amount of room in the base. I personally think both types are ugly as heck.

Though I do wonder if the Ultra Efficient LEDs are slightly more reliable than standard ones because the LEDs are not being driven as hard. Though there’s still the issue of the super compact driver with limited heat sinking.

Snow cone LEDs seem more reliable than snow cone LEDs as long as it’s not the cheap ones. Cheap snow cone LEDs have worse lifespans than filament LEDs to be honest.
You do not want bottom-of-the-line snow cone LEDs or one with a less than 15000 hour service life. Many people think big name manufacturers such as GE, Sylvania, and Philips are junk when they just buy the bottom of the barrel lamps from them that are designed to fail.

I agree that filament LEDs fail more than snow cone LEDs if both bulbs are in the same class, like GE’s snow cone LEDs are pretty decent but the filament ones fail all the time.

Philips makes pretty good filament lamps as long as you don’t buy the warm glow version (though the snow cone warm glows are pretty good quality). What I like about Philips is most of their LED bulbs are 90+ CRI except for the cheapest models. I believe Sylvania’s TruWave series is also 90 CRI. For GE unfortunately I can’t really find the Refresh snow cone lamps easily anymore from stores, and those have a good life. I like the 5000K color and those are 90+ CRI. The filament ones are the primary ones sold but those don’t have as good of a service life (GE isn’t exactly known for making the best filament lamps).

Philips’s Ultra Efficient lamps claim a ridiculously long lifespan (like 45,000 hours), but I’m pretty sure not all bulbs in 2028 will have that long of a lifespan.

This is true, but as of right now most really high end ultra high CRI LEDs, particularly violet pumps, are snow cones.

Idk why this is the case though.
